What to Expect from the Future of Video Game Adaptations and When to Expect It

DECEMBER 21, 2022: Mario Bros.

Focusing on characters from one of the biggest gaming franchises ever, an as of yet untitled Mario Bros. animated feature film is coming to theaters worldwide in 2022. It will be the second animated feature focusing on the beloved Nintendo mascot, following the 1986 anime Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! and the first full-length movie since the 1993 live-action adaptation Super Mario Bros.

The project was revealed to be in development in November 2017, when details emerged regarding a partnership between Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination. It took another four years for it to find its directors in Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (both of Teen Titans Go! fame) and its all-star cast. On a Nintendo Direct presentation in September 2021 it was announced that Chris PrattCharlie Day, Anya Taylor-JoyJack BlackKeegan-Michael Key, and Seth Rogen would be joining the voice cast, as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Toad, and Donkey Kong, respectively.

The movie is set for a Christmas 2022 release date, with more projects focusing on Mario and his universe set to be produced pending this first project’s commercial success.
