What To Expect From the Future of Video Game Adaptations and When to Expect It
January 15, 2021: Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat is getting a new cinematic adaptation since 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. This film is the result of Kevin Tancharoen once pitching a film to Warner Bros. Pictures in 2010. He got hired to direct in 2011 based on a screenplay by Oren Uziel. In the end, the film was delayed due to budget constraints but left the production by 2013. It wasn’t until 2015 that the film would enter production. Now, the film is slated to release in early 2021 with a confirmed R-rating.
The first person to join the cast was Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. They started expanding the core cast that includes Mehcad Brooks, Tadanobu Asano, Sisi Stringer, and Ludi Lin. They will be playing many iconic characters. Lin is playing as Liu Kang, but it is unknown if he will be the films’ main lead, like in the original 1995 adaptation.
Simon McQuoid will make his directorial debut with Mortal Kombat. Oren Uziel‘s original script survived the lengthy production process, and Greg Russo also joined the writing duties. Benjamin Wallfisch is also attached to compose the film’s music.
