  • ‘Black Widow’ Nearly Doubled Its U.S. Disney+ Viewing Households In Its Second Week

‘Black Widow’ Nearly Doubled Its U.S. Disney+ Viewing Households In Its Second Week

There has been much debate surrounding Black Widow‘s release. Its second weekend saw a sharp drop at the Box Office, which was on par with other releases in the pandemic. What didn’t help was that Disney+ did not release the official numbers for the second week. So far, we only are aware that they made $60M from their Premier Access service. Once again, we have to rely on third-party analysts to figure out how exactly the film will perform on the streaming service. Luckily, Samba TV offered insight into how many US households watched Marvel Studios’ latest during its release. Keep in mind, these are estimates and not official numbers.

It seems that they almost doubled the viewership, as it rose from 1.1M households to 2M over the last week. So, an estimated 900K purchased the film from July 12th up until the 18th. It’s quite an impressive number that could hint at a steady growth on the streamer. Their analysis is based on 3M SmartTV terrestrial households that consume a show or film for at least five minutes. It doesn’t include mobile viewers.

Black Widow snags $215M in biggest opening since pandemic began - CNET

Going by their analysis, the film managed a domestic total of $131.6M through Disney+ alone. Even with the 67% drop in its second weekend, the film still earned $263M so far. If you add in the Diseny+ Premier Access numbers, Black Widow might already be nearing $400M. It’s impressive growth, but piracy is still an issue with simultaneous releases. It’ll hurt the film’s Box Office legs which are already questionable due to the pandemic’s influence on the cinema market.

There’s a strong likelihood that Jungle Cruise will be the last Disney film to use this model moving forward, even if they only have to share around 15% with platform providers rather than the 40% cinema share. Whatever happens, we’ll certainly be keeping a close eye on its development and what it could mean for Marvel Studios’ next release, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

  • Kevin Feige Offers Insight Into How Marvel Studios Expands the MCU

Kevin Feige Offers Insight Into How Marvel Studios Expands the MCU

The final episode of Loki has redefined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All the eons that the Time Variance Authority spent keeping the Sacred Timeline in order was for nothing. One single action has unleashed the multiverse, and Marvel Studios has a brand new challenge ahead of them. Avengers: Endgame gave us the base rules for how time travel works. It seems like they had everything mapped out in advance, but Kevin Feige offered some insight into how they tackle these projects.

Mary Livanos oversaw WandaVision from start to finish, Zoie Nagelhout oversaw The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on the ground every day from start to finish, Kevin Wright came up with much of what you love about the Loki series and was right next to Kate Herron and Tom Hiddleston the entire time

It might be the most insight we got into the way they approach projects, as he confirmed they have one person focusing full time on a specific project. The latest Disney+ show helped us understand how time and dimensions are connected within this franchise before breaking it wide open.

There are people whose sole tasks it is to keep it in their head and deliver it for us and then we have interconnected meetings quite often about how things grow and evolve and [Louis D’Esposito] and I and [Victoria Alonso] bounce between all of those.

    Datei:Kevin Feige Infinity War Premiere.jpg – Wikipedia

Head writer Michael Waldron probably built upon the rules set by the last Avengers film that will continue to grow with the next Doctor Strange film. So, it continues to grow with each project and the multiverse might just be the beginning. Before that, What If will be our first follow-up into the multiverse. It seems that the Marvel Studios team found out about the overarching rules now that it is public information.

As you indicated before we started recording, the multiverse is coming up in a big way. There’s interconnectivity there that people have already started to see and suss out and I had a meeting this morning with the whole broad Marvel Studios team going through the multiverse and the rules of the multiverse and exactly how to really deliver on the excitement surrounding the multiverse.

He also goes on to say that they do make changes to adapt to the ongoing storylines but never at the sacrifice of the individual story being told. As the franchise continues to grow through films and Disney+, they will have a lot of opportunities to explore the multiverse in new and creative ways. Here’s hoping they’ll share some more information in the coming months.

  • Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige Talks New Approach to the MCU Actor’s Contracts

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige Talks New Approach to the MCU Actor’s Contracts

It looks like Marvel Studios has changed its approach to their actor’s contractual obligations. In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some actors would be signed up to six or even nine films, which was long rumored to be the case with Samuel L. Jackson and Sebastian Stan. Since Avengers: Endgame released, we’ve seen many long-time Marvel actors leave the franchisee.

There are many hints that Black Widow will be the last time we see Scarlett Johnasson on-screen as Natasha Romanoff. We have seen exceptions, such as many of the MCU actors lending their voices to the upcoming What If series. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige discussed their new approach after acknowledging the earlier contracts in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

It varies, project to project, cast to cast. Really, what we want are people that come in, are excited to be in the universe, are excited at the opportunity to do more things, as opposed to being locked into contractual obligations.

We’ve seen in the past that many of the franchise’s actors are open to returning even for minor roles. There have been times where these even led to actors having a bad experience with the studio, such as Idris Elba openly stating not wanting to return as Heimdall in Thor: The Dark World. Luckily, Thor: Ragnarok seemed to change his mind on the matter as he had fun filming it. Still, the new approach is a showcase that they want to build long-term relationships with actors in a way that doesn’t restrict them either.

We’ve seen that flexibility more and more, such as adapting their schedules to allow James Gunn to finish his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. There was even mention of contracts being set up for “theme park attractions,” which might hint at the voice-acting roles they have done to bring some of their beloved characters to life in various rides or videos in Disney’s theme parks. So, it’s a clear sign that Marvel Studios has continued to expand since the early days o a small studio risking it all on a C-list character.

  • Disney Casts Rachel Zegler as Snow White in Marc Webb’s Live-Action Adaptation

Disney Casts Rachel Zegler as Snow White in Marc Webb’s Live-Action Adaptation

It seems that Disney has finally found their next live-action Disney princess, as West Side Story‘s Rachel Zegler has been cast in the role according to Deadline. Even if the film won’t release until Winter, she has already made her name well-known in the industry. The film will be an adaptation of the original animated feature with Marc Webb set to direct. Marc Platt will take on the role of producer as they eye a production start in 2022. Webb had the following to say about her casting:

Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale.

Snow White isn’t her only high-profile role, as the actress also joined the upcoming Shazam: Fury of the Gods sequel. It looks like her career is just starting and she’ll have a bright future ahead of her in the industry. We’re also curious if we can expect the casting of the seven dwarfs in the near future that are a popular aspect of the original Brothers Grimm fairytale and the animated feature. Disney might also keep a close eye on its production, as it was the first film released in their animated slate back in 1938. Deadline hints that the music and story will get expanded with the live-action adaptation, as the new songs will be written by La La Land‘s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It’s already sounding like a promising entry in Disney’s live-action adaptations of their classic animated films.

  • ‘Loki’s Final Episode Officially Finished and With Disney+

‘Loki’s Final Episode Officially Finished and With Disney+

We’re already anxiously awaiting the next episode of Loki, which will continue to unravel the Marvel Cinematic Universe in new and interesting ways. It looks like production on Loki has still continued up until recently, as director Kate Herron took to Twitter to announce that she dropped off the final episode with Disney+. While filming has finished some time ago, it seems they spent a lot of time putting the finishing touches on the series in post-production. Of course, she doesn’t give away any details about the finale but shares her enthusiasm about finally finishing work on the film she pitched two years ago.

    https://twitter.com/iamkateherron/status/1406672108881682440

It’s interesting that she finished the cut around four to three weeks ahead of its release, as Matt Shakman, the writer behind WandaVision, revealed that they had to work through a lot of crunch time to get it out around two weeks ahead of its premiere. They seemed to be the most affected by the pandemic, but it’s uncertain if Loki also had to work under some restrictions. Whatever is the case, it’s great to know that everything is set to release on time.

Loki introduced the world to the Time Variance Authority and the Sacred Timeline. We still know very little about how the show will continue to explore Tom Hiddleston‘s character, who faced a harsh reality after Avengers: Endgame. The world also got introduced to Sophia Di Martino‘s Variant Sylvie that will most likely be the focus of the third episode after our favorite Variant chased after her through a Time Door.

  • REPORT: First Details on T’Challa’s ‘What If’ Episode

REPORT: First Details on T’Challa’s ‘What If’ Episode

It seems that Illuminerdi wasn’t quite done with the What If series just yet. They’ve recently revealed that Michael B. Jordan‘s Erik Killmonger will have an episode that’ll see him work alongside Tony Stark in the upcoming series. Well, it seems they got their hands on one more bit of in regarding another returning Black Panther character, T’Challa. We got the tease that he’ll take over the mantle of Star-Lord, as Yondu picks him up rather than Peter Quill. It seems that not only will he take on the moniker, but he’ll also lead the Ravagers, who are reformed criminals in his episode’s scenario rather than mercenaries. It’s uncertain exactly why he takes on that name, as it was given to Quill by his mother in the original Guardians of the Galaxy.

The prospect of T’Challa heading to space is already quite interesting, but there are a lot of questions open regarding how these episodes will be tackled. It seems that they most likely will explore a specific scenario per episode that continues to unravel from that point on. It actually fits into the way Loki showcases how the multiverse expands from the Sacred Timeline, as it is common for a Variant to push that timeline into a new direction. Perhaps in this case it was Yondu who mistook T’Challa for Quill that ended up changing the events of the original Guardians of the Galaxy film. Whatever may be the cause, it’s going to be interesting to see when they’ll start promoting Marvel Studios’ first foray into animation.

  • Disney+ Officially Shifting All Original Series to Wednesday Premieres After ‘Loki’s Success

Disney+ Officially Shifting All Original Series to Wednesday Premieres After ‘Loki’s Success

It turns out Tom Hiddleston wasn’t lying when he said Wednesdays are the new Fridays. After his show, Loki, debuted to record-breaking numbers last week on Disney+, the streaming service has officially made the move to leave weekends behind and shift all original programming to Wednesday episode drops. Only Disney+ original films will continue to be made available on Fridays. The shift in their schedule will affect the platform globally, with every series set to debut after July 1 changing its initial release date. For example, the anticipated Monsters Inc. spin-off Monsters at Work will now drop its first episode on July 7 instead of July 2, and Disney’s Turner & Hooch reboot series will move its debut from July 16 to July 21. Other series impacted include Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life, Growing Up Animal, Short Circuit, Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts, and The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.

The change is a notable one, considering Disney has been fully committed to the classic weekend episode drop since its launch. Marvel’s previous series, WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, both adhered to the policy with great success, as did Lucasfilm’s The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian. It would seem Loki debuted to astronomical numbers if they were convincing enough to alter a working machine. Disney+’s current Star Wars project, The Bad Batch, will not be affected by the new corporate policy. Episodes will continue to be released on Fridays. Yet, it will most likely be the last high-profile series to do so on the streaming service.

  • REVIEW: ‘Luca’ Feels Like Pixar’s First Studio Ghibli Film

REVIEW: ‘Luca’ Feels Like Pixar’s First Studio Ghibli Film

To say that Luca is Pixar’s best work to date feels trite given the brilliance of each film the company puts on a consistent level, which is unlike any other animation studio. I mean, last year saw the release of the beautifully gut-wrenching existential reflection that was Soul, which I absolutely adored. In the years before that, you had Coco, Inside Out, and The Incredibles sequel! If Pixar was a band, they’d probably be the Beatles during their studio years, where every single album was of note. We live in an age of Pixar films where there’s an argument to be made that each release is their best so there’s almost no point in proclaiming why Luca is the best when their next one might just surpass it.

But with that said, it’s hard not to look at Luca as one of “those” Disney classics. The spirit of the film feels like a homage to the quaint stories of old that brim with wonder and awe. When I spoke to director Enrico Casarosa, he mentioned the huge influence Hayao Miyazaki and the Studio Ghibli films had on his own ideations of friendship and adolescence as he was making the film. And you can truly feel that emanate from Luca; the way the film captures the innocent gaze a child casts onto its world, the nostalgia invoked by a homely summer setting, and the conflict of having to conquer one’s fears. There’s an undeniable timelessness in Miyazaki‘s and Studio Ghibli’s work and Luca bats for the same feeling by painting the perfect time with you and your childhood friends.  There’s poignancy in simplicity and the film has that in earnest.

Luca, the titular lead, is voiced by Jacob Tremblay and he’s a young sea monster who spends his days shepherding fish (fisherding?) on his family’s underwater farm while daydreaming of a more exciting life. He lives with his overbearing mother, absent-minded father, and carefree grandma. One day, his curiosity is piqued by life outside the ocean. Problem is, the surface world either means trouble or death for their kind because of fishermen hunting for sea monsters. As such, Luca spends his days cooped up under the stern rule of his mother.

This all changes when he meets a troublemaker named Alberto, voiced by Shazam star Jack Dylan Grazer, who spends his days scavenging human belongings in the surface world (sea monsters, by the way, turn into humans outside of water). The two bond over a shared dream of one day owning a Vespa, which they believe to be the most beautiful invention known to man. Alberto, being an unruly kid, forces Luca to step outside of his comfort zone as they partake in shenanigans on a nearby remote island. This, of course, doesn’t sit well with Luca’s mom.

Watch Pixar's New Official Luca Trailer Deliver A Stunning Coming of Age story - The Illuminerdi

From there on out, the story’s fabric unravels as a slice-of-life vignette across an Italian riviera. It takes place in a poor fishing village called Porto Rosso (an obvious reference to Porco Rosso). Luca and Alberto find themselves living their best days, learning the ropes of the surface world while keeping their monstrous side a secret. There, they meet a friend in Giulia, who helps them realize their dream of owning a Vespa by signing up for the local triathlon. This may all seem not exciting compared to Pixar films that have sprawling adventures into fantastical worlds but it’s in these unadorned, reserved vignettes of life where much of the film’s heart truly beats.

Stand by Me was a movie that came to mind several times while watching Luca. Not because it had a bunch of kids cursing and smoking as they hiked to see a dead body, but for how it manages to capture the kinds of friendships a lot of people have during their youth. Alberto is the Chris Chambers here; a misfit that’s dismissive, reckless, protective, but deeply woeful while Luca, of course, is Gordie Lachance; wide-eyed, naive, and full of innocence. Their friendship feels tenuous at times, strained by the surface world they dream of living in but in spite of that, there’s a real undercurrent of love. And like in the Rob Reiner classic, the characters are inevitably faced with the hard choice of taking the first steps into maturity. “Silenzio, Bruno,” a mantra about conquering your fears is one you’ll often hear in the film and it’s one that ultimately crescendos into an absolutely beautiful finale that made my eyes bawl out.

Tremblay and Grazer are phenomenal in this. They truly feel like the real-life counterparts of their characters. This was a movie that was wholly produced during COVID meaning the stars weren’t able to record in the same room as they normally would in these films. But their performances nonetheless feel so authentic and true. I don’t know if Grazer and Tremblay are good friends in real life but this movie convinces you they are. Grazer is fantastic in this and really carries that brazen vulnerability that makes Alberto such a resonant character. You can’t stand him at one point but then totally shed a tear for him later on.

The supporting characters are all so fun to watch too. Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan voice the wacky sea monster parents of Luca. While they obviously play a critical emotional role in Luca’s journey, they really bring all of the laughs for a chunk of the film. Certain residents of Porto Rosso are also of note, specifically Giulia’s father Massimo and his cat Machiavelli, who feel like the most Ghibli-esque characters in the film. Even the film’s de facto bad guy/bully Ercole, while one-note at times, is entertaining to watch.

VIDEO: New Trailer for Pixar's "Luca", Coming to Disney+ June 18 - WDW News Today

And then you have the obviously gorgeous visuals by the Pixar team. Their version of the Italian Riviera is breathtaking, albeit exaggerated to feel more like an impressionistic painting. Knowing Casarosa’s admiration for Miyazaki, I can’t help but imagine how even more spectacular this film would be as a hand-drawn film. Nonetheless, the film stands as a pure treat for the eyes and ears with its vibrant vistas and Dan Romer’s vintage-inspired Italian score.

With its big Studio Ghibli energy and old-fashioned tale of friendship and overcoming fears, Luca is a fresh kind of Pixar movie in and of itself. It may not have the existential ambition of Soul nor the superhero fun offered by the Incredibles but it has a heart unlike any other and that makes for the perfect feel-good movie to watch these days.

  • Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King Sighted in New ‘The Little Mermaid’ Set Photos

Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King Sighted in New ‘The Little Mermaid’ Set Photos

It looks like it’s set photos season, as we’ve been seeing a lot of current projects find their way online. In a way, it’s the true sign that the film industry is recovering slowly and we’re a step closer to business-as-usual. Now, we’ve covered a lot of set photos from various superhero properties, such as Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Titans. There were also quite a few set photos from Thor: Love and Thunder teasing the franchise’s potential craziness from returning director Taika Waititi. Now, it seems that another Disney property recently started production, and the first set of photos already found their way online for the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Twitter user @cravemedia took to Social Media and shared a few images of the production.

    https://twitter.com/cravemedia_/status/1402792169186881542?s=20

The photos offer our first look at our leads Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King. If we go by their costumes, this may be them rehearsing for the iconic sequence when Ariel saves Prince Eric from drowning. If you look closely, you can see that she has a fin attached to her legs. It doesn’t seem to have any color or scales, which might indicate she is still getting used to moving with it in the water. It’s uncertain if they will take a practical approach with the fin or it might be added digitally. We’ll see if more images find their way online that may give us a look at the duo in full costume.

  • Disney Developing a ‘Cruella’ Sequel

    Disney Developing a ‘Cruella’ Sequel

It looks like Cruella was a success, as Disney is fast-tracking a sequel to the Emma Stone-led project. Craig Gillespie will return to direct with Tony McNamara once again working on the screenplay for the film. The One Hundred and One Dalmations prequel explored the early days of villainess Cruella de Vil and how she made her name in the fashion world. The film was released theatrically and on Disney+ Premier Access. While we don’t know how it performed on the streaming service, the film did earn around $48.5M worldwide. A Disney spokesperson shared their enthusiasm for the film’s success:

The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.

Unlike some of their live-action reimaginings of the classic fairytale adaptations, Cruella took a very unique visual approach by integrating a 1970s punk rock aesthetic. It made the film stand out even among the many adaptations that Disney has been working on. What started with 2010’s Alice in Wonderland became a staple of Disney’s cinematic landscape as they saw success with Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. Now, Cruella’s approach to an origin story for the original’s main villain is similar to what they did with the Angelina Jolie-spearheaded Maleficent. Their success could open up the door to exploring other classic villains. Could we see a prequel to The Great Mouse Detective focusing on Professor Ratigan? Probably not, but one thing is for sure, Disney won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
