  • Closer Look at New ‘Hawkeye’ Costumes Offered in Magazine Cover

Closer Look at New ‘Hawkeye’ Costumes Offered in Magazine Cover

We’re only a few weeks away from the release of Hawkeye‘s on Disney+. The series takes place before Christmas, as Jeremy Renner‘s Clint Barton finds himself mentoring Hailee Steinfeld‘s Kate Bishop after she paraded through New York City as Ronin. Some time ago, we got the tease of a comic-accurate costume for Clint. It was a set photo that didn’t offer a clearer picture, but an official magazine cover for Lowdown Magazine offered a closer look at it alongside Bishop, who is sporting the same costume she had in the latest poster.

Clint’s costume was also included in the poster, but as he was shooting an arrow from the side we didn’t get a good look at it. So, this cover confirms that he is wearing the one we saw leaked through a set photo all that time ago, which is heavily inspired by Matt FractionsMy Life as a Weapon run. Her costume seems to integrate different designs, but the detail of her having the arrow in a different shade of purple is a nice touch.

Of course, you can’t include both Hawkeyes without Lucky having a prominent role. He’ll likely be the star of the show, but we don’t know if he might even get an entire episode from his perspective. The series seems strongly inspired by Die Hard, which is a perfect match for the most grounded member of the Avengers. It’ll be interesting if it keeps that inspiration throughout, or even adds some unique flourishes.

  • ‘Hawkeye’ Producer on Drawing Inspiration from the Fraction/Aja Run in the Comics

‘Hawkeye’ Producer on Drawing Inspiration from the Fraction/Aja Run in the Comics

Fans are eagerly awaiting Hawkeye, the next Marvel Studios original Disney+ series. Recently, Marvel Studios executive producer Trinh Tran spoke about how actress Hailee Steinfeld was basically made for the role of Kate Bishop, the young archer Clint Barton teams up within the series. Steinfeld also apparently feels quite attached to the character. In an interview with EW, the actress shared that, “[d]iving into all the information out there on Kate Bishop felt like a dream.”

In an interview with EW, Steinfeld revealed that much of her inspiration for her character came from the critically acclaimed Hawkeye comic by Matt Fraction and David Aja. While we already knew that the series would draw heavily from the well-known run, apparently, the comic particularly influenced the dynamic between Kate and Clint. In the same interview, Tran explained:

“The Fraction/Aja style and tone is what we were really gravitating towards…[o]nce they encounter each other and go off on this journey together, there’s so much they can bounce off each other.”

    Trinh Tran

The witty mentor-mentee relationship between the two archers was certainly a standout aspect of the Fraction/Aja comic– if Hawkeye can manage to pull off something similar, or successfully adapt any of the other Hawkeye comic components, the series may end up being something quite special.

The first two episodes of Hawkeye premiere on Disney+ later this month.

  • Hailee Steinfeld Was Marvel Studios’ “Go-to-Girl” for the Role of Kate Bishop

Hailee Steinfeld Was Marvel Studios’ “Go-to-Girl” for the Role of Kate Bishop

For well over a year, fans rode a roller coaster as rumors of Hailee Steinfeld signing on as Kate Bishop ebbed and flowed. She was in; she was out; she signed on the dotted line; the project was delayed and might have cost her the role; the project was delayed and allowed her to land the role. In reality, nobody knew what to believe and it wasn’t until we got the first photos and videos of Steinfeld on set that anyone was sure she had landed the role of Bishop in Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Hawkeye.

Hawkeye is set to stream (beginning with a 2-episode premiere) on November 24th and from the footage we’ve seen so far, it looks like Steinfeld is not only a great fit for the role but truly gets the role. According to Marvel Studios executive producer Trinh Tran, even though fans rode the rumor mill roller coaster, the studio always knew they wanted Steinfeld for the role.

I remember the very first day when [executive producer and MCU mastermind Kevin Feige] and I sat with Hailee to talk about it. We were just like, ‘This is Kate Bishop.’ When you read the comics, you get that energy from Kate — that wit and those smarts. And meeting Hailee, you see she’s so incredibly talented. Just look at the body of work she’s accomplished at such a young age. We knew having her be a part of the MCU one way or another would be very exciting, but when we started talking about this particular project and this character, she just became our go-to girl.

As Tran says, Steinfeld is a huge star at just 24 years old and brings with her to Marvel Studios an already incredibly well-established fan base of young people. Steinfeld is very much primed to become one of the faces of the MCU’s future and it certainly doesn’t hurt Marvel Studios to have one of those faces be as instantly recognizable as hers. Bishop’s entrance into the MCU will mark the appearance of yet another comic book Young Avenger and as that number continues to grow, it’s only a matter of time until those characters get their own property, one that will certainly see Bishop in the lead. When you think about that future, you can understand why Steinfeld was always Marvel Studios go-to-girl and why they were willing to do what they had to do to find a way to bring her into the MCU.

  • Writers Revealed for First Three Episodes of ‘Hawkeye’

Writers Revealed for First Three Episodes of ‘Hawkeye’

Hawkeye premieres with 2 episodes on Disney+ in little over 3 weeks. Up until now, most of what we have seen from the show has been the Christmas Holiday atmosphere it is leaning into. It’s quite clear from the trailers that Clint Barton’s past as Ronin will drag him along with Kate Bishop into a conflict with the Tracksuit Mafia just before Christmas. As we get closer to the release date there will be more details updated and released about the technical aspects of the show. The Writer’s Guild of America West has updated their site to show the credited writers for the first three episodes.

Episode 1 has been written by series Head Writer Jonathan Igla. He is most well known for his 2010 to 2015 run on Mad Men from Season 4 to Season 7. He also worked on Sorry for Your Loss, a bereavement-focused drama series executive produced by and starring Elizabeth Olsen. Writing Episode 2 is the newest name to be revealed from the Hawkeye writers’ room. Like Igla, Elisa Climent’s credits seem to be a mix of drama and comedy with the aforementioned Sorry For Your Loss, and a dark comedy about a female con artist called Imposters. Finally, for Episode Three, the duo Katrina Mathewson and Tanner Bean who previously announced their involvement on Twitter in March 2020 and who similarly have drama and comedy credits including a previous holiday film Christmas Ever After.

With the glimpses of Rogers the Musical and the seriousness of Clint trying to get back to his family before Christmas it seems like Hawkeye tread the balance between comedy and drama as the the writers’ previous credits seem to indicate. As for how the series itself plays out, we’ll have to wait and see as it premieres towards the end of this month and concludes close to Christmas.

  • ‘Hawkeye’ Artist On Marvel Studios Poster Homage: “Start paying”

‘Hawkeye’ Artist On Marvel Studios Poster Homage: “Start paying”

One of the more unfortunate realities surrounding the billion-dollar franchise that is the MCU is the startling truth that a lot of the people who create the comics that serve as the MCU’s foundation rarely receive worthwhile compensation from the powers that adapt their work.

Famed Hawkeye artist David Aja is joining a growing list of creators who have expressed frustration over this issue that seemingly continues to be unrectified behind the scenes. Last night, a brand new poster for the Hawkeye series was revealed, paying homage to one of the iconic posters Aja drew for his seminal Hawkeye run with Matt Fraction. Aja had this to say about Marvel Studios’ recreation of his work:

David Aja‘s artwork on his run with Matt Fraction is arguably the most important selling point of that run. From his distinct minimalist covers to the inventive visual storytelling methods he brought to the table, there’s no doubt that the book wouldn’t be the classic it is without his touch.

Winter Soldier creator Ed Brubaker recently made waves over complaints he made regarding the issue in light of Marvel Studios building a very lucrative franchise based on his work. The check Marvel Studios allegedly gave Brubaker for adapting the Winter Soldier story was a lot lower than the royalties he received for his 1-second cameo in the movie. Howver, according to Brubaker, Marvel has since reached out to him, likely due to the high publicity of his comments, with the hopes of amending the issue.

The issue is a highly complicated one, given how all the work-for-hire contracts that a lot of these creators signed were drafted at a time when comic adaptations weren’t the world’s hottest commodity. Still, in an era where the studios are making billions off these people’s work, reasonable compensation should not be an issue. We hope Aja and more creators get compensated for their contributions to the MCU.

  • New ‘Hawkeye’ TV Spot Provides a First Look at The Clown

New ‘Hawkeye’ TV Spot Provides a First Look at The Clown

Marvel Studios Hawkeye will be streaming on Disney Plus in just over a month and while we’ve seen a trailer and some other spots, there are still some pretty secrets yet to be revealed, including the faces of the big bads the Hawkeyes will go up against in the series. Sure, we’ve seen the Tracksuits, but they’re mostly there to beat up and provide comic relief; however, a new TV spot has given us our first look at one of the projects real threats alongside a surprising partner.

The spot reveals the first look at Fra Fee‘s Kazimierz Kazimierczak, aka the Clown, alongside Alqua Cox‘s Maya Lopez. While teasers and footage can be edited to trick fans, it seems clear Lopez and Kazi are working together and, when the series streams beginning November 24th, it’ll be interesting to see exactly who the duo are working for since they both have comic book ties to Wilson Fisk, who is heavily (get it) rumored to appear in the series.

Fee doesn’t look too clown like in the new footage, nor does Lopez look very Echo-y, but they both look to be out to cause someone some harm. We know Echo is likely to come around and join the good guys before moving on to her own series, but it seems far less likely The Clown will have a similar transformation.

The first two episodes of Hawkeye will stream on Disney Plus on November 24th.

  • Alaqua Cox Confirms MCU’s Echo Will Have Her Comic Powers

Alaqua Cox Confirms MCU’s Echo Will Have Her Comic Powers

Marvel Studios’ streaming series Hawkeye is set to introduce several major new characters to the MCU when it hits Disney Plus next month. While much of the buzz before the series went into production centered on whether or not Hailee Steinfeld would sign on as Kate Bishop, newcomer Alaqua Cox quickly came into the spotlight when it was announced that her character, Maya Lopez, would have her spinoff series.

Lopez, better known as Echo to comic readers, like Cox, may not have been a household name, but her performance in Hawkeye filled Marvel Studios with enough confidence to greenlight an Echo series just as the character has risen to prominence in the comics. Now the host of the Phoenix Force, Echo is one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel Universe; however, before her run-in with the Ravager of Worlds, Echo was already an elite martial artist, able to stand toe-to-toe with Daredevil. Using her “photographic reflexes”, Echo has been able to perfectly emulate the fighting techniques of anyone she’s watched, making her more than a match for most opponents.

While it was originally unclear if Marvel Studios would adapt Echo’s unique gifts, Cox seems to have indicated they will in a recent interview with People Magazine:

Maya is a bada– woman. She can pick up fighting moves after watching it one time

    Alaqua Cox

So far we’ve only seen one quick look at Echo in the promotional footage for Hawkeye which means we’re all in for a treat when she gets involved in the action. In the comics, she was able to prepare to fight her opponents by watching footage of their past rumbles; in a time when any and everything is recorded and available on the internet, Echo could quickly and easily prepare for just about any opponent. It’ll be fun to see how Marvel Studios interprets her abilities to live-action and who takes the first beating at her hands Hawkeye begins streaming on November 24th on Disney Plus with a two-episode premiere.

  • Alaqua Cox Talks Casting And Representation in ‘HAWKEYE’

Alaqua Cox Talks Casting And Representation in ‘HAWKEYE’

Alaqua Cox will soon make her MCU debut as Echo in Hawkeye and her spin-off show is looking like it will go into production early next year. The first-time actress will also be making her on-screen debut, so we are just beginning to learn a bit more about her. She was recently selected as one of People magazine’s One to Watch 2021 feature indicating what a special talent Marvel Studios have found themselves. In the interview she not only mentions how serendipitously she came across the casting call but also how important the role is for diverse representation on-screen:

I had no acting experience, I was only involved in one school play in high school, but I was a background actor. [My friends] saw the casting call looking for a Native American actress and female deaf actress. It just matched so perfectly, so I decided to go for it. I had never seen anybody on the screen that maybe looked like me … deaf, an amputee.

Cox who is Native American and grew up on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin has been deaf her whole life, has had a right lower leg amputation and was working at a factory before applying for the role. It’s clear that there aren’t many on-screen characters with those kinds of backgrounds, especially in big-budget studio projects, so she also spoke about the impact of playing Echo has had even before she has debuted:

My dad actually cried, and it is rare to see my dad cry. My mom got the champagne — everybody was so excited. I just feel so overwhelmed by support and love. It’s crazy how much my life has already changed because I was a college dropout. I worked at a factory. I’m so excited to show people who I am and what I can do, what anybody can do.

As a first-time actress, and like her character Cox is also learning a lot as she goes. She makes reference to this when talking about enjoying working with Hawkeye himself Jeremy Renner:

I think he’s one of the coolest guys. I learned a lot from him.

Echo is expected to have Native American representation in the writers’ room, potentially including Bobby Wilson, who has worked on Rutherford Falls and Reservation Dogs, both shows with Native American representation in cast and crew. It’s exciting, too, for deaf representation that the casting call Cox shared on Instagram suggested that some of the cast will be deaf with fluency in ASL being a requirement. All in all, Cox’s debut in Hawkeye and the spin-off Echo look set to be boundary-pushing moments for representation in the MCU.

  • New ‘Hawkeye’ Trailer Confirms Linda Cardellini’s Return

New ‘Hawkeye’ Trailer Confirms Linda Cardellini’s Return

Ever since the first trailer for Hawkeye dropped, fans noticed that someone important in Clint Barton’s family was missing. As he commits to keeping his new protégé Kate Bishop out of trouble, he ends up facing the challenge of getting home before Christmas. We see his kids but Linda Cardellini‘s Laura Barton was noticeably absent. Of course, it led to a lot of speculation that she may not get featured in the series, but Disney+ had other plans and the latest trailer finally confirmed her appearance.

    Image

The new trailer doesn’t reveal too much new, but it’s great to get a confirmation on her return. She likely won’t have a large role in the series, but might likely appear in the beginning and end. It’ll be interesting to explore their relationship as Jeremy Renner‘s Barton faces this new challenge. The earliest concept art teased Kate on the Barton farm some time ago, but it’s uncertain if the new direction of this Die Hard-inspired Disney+ series.

The upcoming series will explore Marvel Cinematic Universe’s street-level heroes. It seems like the most down-to-earth take on a story, especially with poor Clint getting beat up quite a bit in the trailer. It’ll join other Marvel Studios dramas with six episodes planned. The premiere will consist of two episodes, which is perfect for it to end ahead of The Book of Boba Fett‘s premiere in December. It’s going to be a busy fourth quarter ahead of us.

  • Marvel Studios ‘Echo’ Simply Cannot Be ‘Daredevil’ Season 4

Marvel Studios ‘Echo’ Simply Cannot Be ‘Daredevil’ Season 4

Daredevil is trending following a rumor that the Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Echo will see much of the cast of Netflix’s Daredevil return and “serve as sort of Daredevil Season 4.” While there’s been some clarification about exactly what the rumored returns would entail, the series is still rumored to heavily feature those characters. That’s a big problem for Disney and Marvel Studios, should they chose to do it.

Charlie Cox is set to suit up as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and rumored to suit up as Daredevil in She-Hulk. Vincent D’Onofrio is rumored to be returning as a beefed up Kingpin in Hawkeye. These are great actors whose portrayals of their respective characters were so beloved by fans that they became synonymous enough with the roles to survive and make the jump to the MCU’s Sacred Timeline. Both of these characters have rich comic book histories with Maya Lopez, aka Echo, and should rightly be a part of her story. However, giving one or both of them the spotlight in Echo while also using it as an opportunity to bring some of the rest of the Netflix cast to the MCU would only serve to undo some of the great strides Marvel Studios has made in their efforts to make the recent entries into their cinematic universe more representative of the real world.

All signs point to newcomer Alaqua Cox having made quite an impression in her role as Lopez in Hawkeye. Cox came in and stood out in a series with returning MCU star Jeremy Renner and multitalented megastar Hailee Steinfeld; stood out so well, in fact, that they made the decision early on to spin her off into her own series. And that series stands to be nothing short of groundbreaking…but not if they decide to go the rumored route detailed above. Echo will feature Cox, a deaf, female, Native American amputee in the lead. The writers’ room is expected to include Native American staff, potentially including Bobby Wilson, who has worked on Reservation Dogs and Rutherford Falls. These moves by Marvel Studios are truly unprecedented in the superhero/CBM genre. Making Echo the answer to #SaveDaredevil’s prayers would undo all the good will and great strides they’re making.

With Cox and D’Onofrio reprising their roles, the rest of the “main cast” of Daredevil is comprised of mostly white actors and actresses who, in comparison to Cox and D’Onofrio, just didn’t bring the same sort of unforgettable gravitas to their roles. But to be completely honest and fair, the talent of those actors isn’t really the issue. Surrounding Alaqua Cox, in her own series, by a primarily white cast who don’t look like her would be nothing short of insulting and undermine having made her the star to begin with. Making Murdock and Fisk big parts of the series would steal the spotlight from Maya Lopez’s story. Marvel Studios has the chance to do something special with Echo and making it Daredevil Season 4 is simply not it. Nobody is going to say no to a Marvel Studios Daredevil series, but let that be its own entity. Failing to give Echo the spotlight in her own series would be a giant leap in the wrong direction.
