  • Iman Vellani on How ‘Ms. Marvel’ is a “More Lighthearted” Marvel Studios Series

Iman Vellani on How ‘Ms. Marvel’ is a “More Lighthearted” Marvel Studios Series

When we got the first trailer for Ms. Marvel, it looked like the series was fully embracing its high school aesthetic. Teenagers facing their usual challenges but with the added bonus of Iman Vellani‘s Kamala Khan becoming a superhero and being a Pakistani-American. In a new interview with Zavvi, the young actress highlights their approach and teases a “more lighthearted” Marvel Studios series.

It is John Hughes-esque mixed with Lady Bird and Scott Pilgrim. It’s a lot more lighthearted than the other shows. We showcase that being a teenager is awkward, corny, and weird.

    Iman Vellani

She goes on to highlight that the series is going to be quite self-aware of the fact that it explores the challenges of “growing up” and when the smallest issues feel like the world is falling apart around you.

We are self-aware of how cheesy the show gets sometimes, but when you are growing up everything is so heightened – your emotions, crushes, friendships – it all feels so new. Minor inconveniences also feel like the end of the world.

    Iman Vellani

The Ms. Marvel creative team also wanted to ensure that they are as authentic as possible. To accomplish that very task, they’ve enlisted the help of the cast who are fresh out of high school to bring in their lived experiences of what it’s like being a modern teenager.

The creators and directors have done a great job in working with the cast, asking us to share our experiences and bring ourselves to the characters. It was very collaborative. We are pretty young and just come out of high school, so that made the show as authentic as possible.

    Iman Vellani

It definitely sounds like we’ll fully embrace the high school storytelling in this series, something we’ve gotten a glimpse of in Spider-Man: Homecoming as well. It’ll be interesting to see the difference between these projects as they showcase the different lived experiences of teenagers.

  • Yasmin Finney Joins ‘Doctor Who’ Series 14 as Rose

Yasmin Finney Joins ‘Doctor Who’ Series 14 as Rose

There’s a new Rose aboard the Tardis.

Heartstoppers breakout, Yasmin Finney, is set to play Rose in Series 14 of Doctor Who. She joins the new Doctor, who will be played by Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa. Also joining the duo are former series stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate. Finney will be one of the first transgender actors to appear in Doctor Who.

If anyone would have told eight-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them,” Finney said in a statement to the press.“This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life.

    Yasmin Finney

Series 14 of Doctor Who will see Russell T. Davies take over as showrunner. Davies, of course, helped to bring the show to modern times when he rebooted the beloved series in 2005 with the episode titled “Rose.” Davies exited the series in 2010 following “The End of Time: Part Two,” which is when Steven Moffat took over. Davies will now take over for Chris Chibnall, who helped bring the world the first female Doctor with Jodie Whittaker.

While it is unknown whether Finney’s character will be a new Rose, or will be a new iteration of the character first portrayed by Billie Piper, Davies doesn’t seem too keen to answer just yet. The showrunner merely teased, “How can there be another Rose?”

  • Hayden Christensen Teases Darth Vader’s “Personal Mission” in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Hayden Christensen Teases Darth Vader’s “Personal Mission” in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

The announcement that Hayden Christensen would be reprising his role of Anakin Skywalker (aka Darth Vader) in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+ was one of the most surprising in recent memory of the Star Wars universe. While the series will predominantly focus on Ewan McGregor’s reprisal as the titular character, audiences will also get to follow the rise of the most iconic cinematic villains in Darth Vader.

One of the most compelling elements of returning to Darth Vader at this point in time is connecting the dots between when audiences last saw Christensen as Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith and the cold, calculated antagonist of A New Hope. In an interview on The Cutaway with William Mullally, Hayden Christensen discussed the untapped potential in returning to this specific era of the Star Wars timeline.

This is sort of a point in the timeline that hasn’t really been explored yet, and I think that the character of Darth Vader is at an interesting point in his life, in terms of what has happened before and where we left him in Episode III

    Hayden Christensen

As well in the interview, Christensen discussed how he views the character motivations for Skywalker in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

He’s very much sort of trying to reconcile his past, and hunting down the Jedi… obviously it’s his job and he’s mandated by the Emperor, but it’s more than that. It’s a personal mission for him.

    Hayden Christensen

This perspective certainly has the ability to make Star Wars fans quite excited for what’s in store for Darth Vader’s arc in the upcoming Disney+ series. As well, the notion of Skywalker hunting the Jedi as a means of getting closure with his past makes the potential of a confrontation with Ewan McGregor’s portrayal as his old master all the more tantalizing. It would be the ultimate showdown between someone trying to eliminate the past and someone trying to bring forth a new future.

In addition to Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to co-star with an all-star cast of Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr, Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

The Deborah Chow-directed series is set to debut on Disney+ on May 27.

  • David Tennant Spotted in Newly Leaked ‘Doctor Who’ Set Photos

David Tennant Spotted in Newly Leaked ‘Doctor Who’ Set Photos

Shortly after the announcement dropped that not only will David Tennant return to Doctor Who alongside Catherine Tate, we’ve already gotten our first look at his Doctor on the set for the new season. What stands out is that we see him alongside the 13th’s TARDIS, which may hint at it possibly being the 10th Doctor catching up with Jodie Whitaker’s version or he may actually be an in-between regeneration before Ncuti Gatwa takes on the role. The photos are shared by Twitter user @_PigginTeaBreak.

There’s also another shot featuring Tennant in a new coat, or it may just be a better close-up of the one he was wearing, which was obscured due to the distance the photos were taken, as shared by @BadWolfArchives.

There’s a lot we don’t know yet about what the new season of Doctor Who will have in store for us. It almost seems like it’ll be a crossover of multiple versions of the Doctor meeting each other, similar to the 50th anniversary. yet, they could also take it into a different direction and Tennant becomes an in-between version where he returns to an identity of an older version of himself. While it’s not something that has been done before, it would create a unique position for this new generation of Doctor to switch between older versoins of himself.

  • Geeked Week Trailer Offers First Look at ‘The Sandman’s Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer in Action

Geeked Week Trailer Offers First Look at ‘The Sandman’s Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer in Action

A new trailer has arrived teasing early June’s Geeked Week, which will be a special event hosted by Netflix to talk about all their upcoming projects. We’ve gotten teases that we’ll get some news on the live-action One Piece series by then, though a trailer seems very unlikely given they only recently wrapped work on two episodes, and more information on the new The Sandman adaptation. With a new trailer released to celebrate the occasion, Netflix also included quite a few sequences including our first look at Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer in action. Luckily, Fandom pulled the small set of footage showing off Christie’s charming take on Lucifer.

It’s amazing to see how they’ve adapted Lucifer’s design to live-action and we’ll see what role she’ll have in the story, especially with not knowing how exactly they may tackle the adaptation. The graphic novel’s original creator Neil Gaiman is heavily involved and the footage shown seems like it’s staying true to his vision in many ways. It’s an exciting prospect to finally get a live-action adaptation after many pitches seemingly failed over the years. So, we’ll see what the future has in store for us once we get another full trailer during Geeked Week.

  • THEORY TIME: How ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Sets Up ‘WandaVision’s Agatha Spinoff

THEORY TIME: How ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Sets Up ‘WandaVision’s Agatha Spinoff

WandaVision introduced us to the iconic Kathryn Hahn’s witchy persona, Agatha Harkness. She was definitely a standout for the series, and it seems that Disney+, as well as Marvel Studios, saw the potential in further exploring her character. In a surprising move, they gave Agatha her own spinoff titled Agatha: House of Harkness. Given what happens to her at the end of WandaVision, it seemed like we might take a step into the past with her upcoming series, but the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may indirectly set up the spinoff series.

After Wanda is taken over by the Darkhold and fully embraces the Scarlet Witch persona, she continues down the path that Agatha warned her about. Yet, after facing the monster that she became, she took down the shrine built in her honor that also led to the end of the Darkhold across the multiverse. While her fate is still left open after a small puff of chaos magic is unleashed before the shrine collapses, it does seem like she’ll be out of commission as a result of the entire structure collapsing on her head.

It would be interesting if they explore her storyline from the Young Avengers: The Children’s Crusade, where she ends up with amnesia and lives with Victor von Doom. We have no idea if that may be the future storyline they are heading towards but one thing is clear: her actions in the film may also end up loosening her grip on Agatha. She was hexed into living a normal suburban life as the nosy neighbor she played while infiltrating Wanda’s initial Westview takeover.

We will likely start the Agatha: House of Harkness series the moment that red puff of chaos magic is unleashed. The Scarlet Witch being hit by the falling debris ends up breaking the curse put upon the witch, who finds herself in Westview again. Now that she’s freed, she starts retracing her steps and we may finally find out what was up with her bunny. Perhaps we even see the return of Evan Peters as Ralph Bohner, who just accepted that Agatha now lives with him.

The big change will be in the fact that she is also no longer controlled by the Darkhold, which seemingly also corrupted her in some way. We may see a redemption story, as Agatha tries to reconnect with the family she left behind for her pursuits in witchcraft. We’ve gotten a glimpse into how that world of the MCU’s magic works, but the series would give us a chance to truly dive deep into the history of witchcraft we’ve only gotten a glimpse at, as Agatha tries to find her place in the world without the Darkhold’s control and faces the consequences of her actions in the past.

  • Netflix Working on ‘Black Mirror’ Season 6

Netflix Working on ‘Black Mirror’ Season 6

It looks like Black Mirror will make a comeback after a three-year hiatus. The dystopian series made its last premiere with SEason 5 back in June of 2019, but the anthology series may be making a comeback. Variety has just reported that work may be underway on the sixth season, which will consist of even more episodes than the previous one. Season 5 surprised many when it mainly consisted of three episodes but had quite the talent to back it up.

It seems Black Mirror is trying to treat each episode as its own film with a”more cinematic in scoop” approach. That was one of the reasons we got fewer episodes but they started to go beyond just the 60-minute mark with high production values. It’s unclear who is currently working on the project as its creator, Charlie Brooker alongside creative partner Annabel Jones left the production company House of Tomorrow in 2020. They’ve since set up a new production banner, Broke and Bones, while the rights to Black Mirror remained with House of Tomorrow.

Brooker was unclear if there would even be a future for the series, as he wanted to move away from the more depressing outlook the series provided, especially given the current situations. It’s still crazy to think that the dystopian series initially started on Channel 4 before becoming a worldwide phenomenon under the Netflix umbrella, which then led to it adding big-name actors like Miley Cyrus, Topher Grace, Anthony Mackie, and more. We’ll see what the sixth season might have to offer without its original creative team.

  • BREAKING: David Tennant and Catherine Tate Returning to ‘Doctor Who’

BREAKING: David Tennant and Catherine Tate Returning to ‘Doctor Who’

In what has come as a bit of pleasantly surprising news for Doctor Who fans, it’s officially announced that both David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be returning to their respective roles at the 10th Doctor and Donna Noble. The duo will be filming some type of material to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the classic British television program in 2023.

While the nature of what this project will entail is currently unknown, it will be done under the direction of Russell T. Davies, who served as showrunner for the series when the two were the leads. Davies is slated to return as the showrunner for the series, who recently announced Ncuti Gatwa as the next Doctor. There were rumors that Tennant may take on the role of the new Doctor, but turns out he was going to return as the 10th.

Speaking on the announcement of David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s return, Russell T. Davies discussed his excitement about reuniting with the popular duo and teased the mysterious nature of their return.

They’re back! And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?  Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.

    Russell T. Davies

David Tennant portrayed the role of the 10th Doctor from 2005 to 2010 (in addition to reprising the role in Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special in 2013). Catherine Tate appeared throughout the third and fourth series as a primary companion to the 10th Doctor. In their time on screen, they became an extremely popular duo that remains part of a fond era of fans of the show. The news of their return has certainly lit a strong level of excitement for what the Doctor Who franchise has in store for 2023.

  • REPORT: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Disney+ Series May Be in Early Development

REPORT: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Disney+ Series May Be in Early Development

After a lot of silence, we finally got an update on the upcoming Margo Robbie-led Pirates of the Caribbean film. Most of the discussion surrounding the film franchise was on Johnny Depp‘s recent statement that he would never want to return to the franchise. Still, it seems they are definitely moving forward with the franchise, but it looks like DisInsider may have gotten their hands on some tidbits that hint at more plans in development for the franchise beyond just a new film, as it may be getting a spinoff on Disney+ as well.

As part of their DisInsider Show’s “Rumor of the Week” segment, they shared the news that a Pirates of the Caribbean Disney+ series is “in very early development stages.” It’s very likely that they are only pitching the idea around and have no talent or directors attached at the moment. The Pirates franchise has built up its own mythology over the course of its many films, and there’s a lot of potential in further exploring the world in a series.

Pirate-based stories have been seeing an uprise in interest, especially after the success of HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death. There’s also the upcoming live-action One Piece adaptation that has quite a few set photos teasing many practical ships being built for the manga adaptation by Netflix. Starz also enjoyed quite the success with their Black Sails series. So, it’s the perfect time for Disney to also explore the franchise through a new Disney+ series that could further explore the mythology and world that kept people watching when the initial trilogy was released back in the day.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Stunt Double Reveals Unused Bathroom Fight Against the Jackal

‘Moon Knight’ Stunt Double Reveals Unused Bathroom Fight Against the Jackal

In the first episode, we all remember the dramatic reveal of Moon Knight‘s costume after he took down a Jackal that was summoned by Ethan Hawke‘s Arthur Harrow. Well, it turns out that they had an entire sequence planned but that got cut for one reason or another. Oscar Isaac‘s stunt double Jamel Bissat shared a video of the stunt previz that was initially planned for the fight with the Jackal. It very likely never got beyond this previz stage and ended up on the cutting room floor.

They likely realized that the dramatic reveal would’ve worked best to focus on the character’s introduction even if it’s a shame we didn’t get such a memorable action sequence. They certainly went all out and you can see how that bathroom ended up the way it did. Wile it’s a shame we didn’t get it, there’s probably a good reasoning why they went that direction and things tend to get lost during pre-production. They likely also wanted to focus on the action sequences we get later that were built up towards throughout the series’ runtime.

We’ll see what else may have been lost in production due to budgetary or even storytelling reasons, but it’s always interesting to get a look behind the scenes. Previz has become an essential aspect to map out sequences and stunts that help bring these elements to life. Stunt work is an integral aspect of modern storytelling and it’s great to get a good look at how they iniitally mapped out this one sequence.
