  • RUMOR: Netflix’s Live-Action ‘ONE PIECE’ Series Eyeing Ludi Lin as Zoro

RUMOR: Netflix’s Live-Action ‘ONE PIECE’ Series Eyeing Ludi Lin as Zoro

There’s been no information on the live-action adaptation of Netflix’s One Piece series. Its showrunner Steve Maeda did share an Instagram post that the pandemic postponed their show back in March. That was the last official update we got our hands on since. Luckily, it seems that the folks over at Illuminerdi might have gotten their hands on some curious details on the upcoming project alongside what could be the first potential casting for the show, as Netflix is eyeing Ludi Lin in the role of Zorro.

Illuminerdi got their hands on the character descriptions for the various member of the Straw Hat Pirates. The before-mentioned casting would be the biggest inclusion. His background as a martial artist would make him a good choice due to Zoro’s affinity for swordplay. He’s a key member of the team as the crew’s first mate. After Luffy sets out to the sea, he comes across the pirate hunter and they build an inseparable bond throughout their travels on the Grand Line.

His character description hints at some familiar characteristics. They highlight his time as a mercenary, as he does any work to get around. They also highlight his love for his weapons and a good drink. Sadly, no mention of his terrible sense of direction which would’ve been a fun addition given his perchance of getting lost at the worst possible moments.

  • How ‘SWEET TOOTH’ Season 2 Could Take a Different Route From the Comics

How ‘SWEET TOOTH’ Season 2 Could Take a Different Route From the Comics

Netflix gave us the sweetest bit of news announcing Sweet Tooth will be returning for a second season on the streaming service. The series, based on the popular comic of the same name made its debut to outstanding reviews from critics. It even became one of the streamers highest viewed series with over 60 million accounts tuning into the series. Sweet Tooth was only two million away from The Queens Gambit‘s viewers.

Sweet Tooth: Start heute am 4.6.21, Folgen, Besetzung, Trailer, Handlung zur Netflix-Serie

It follows a hybrid deer boy named Gus, who is off looking for his mother. In his journey, he is accompanied by a human named Jeppered. Together traverse the end of the world. While no adaption follows its source material 100%, Sweet Tooth seems to be heading in a similar direction as the original comic going by the first season ended. So, let’s take a closer look at what the second season has in store for us.

If you want to remain completely unspoiled, we will discuss the ending of the comics in this section. Only continue at your own risk.

The end of the first season saw Becky pick up a signal on a walkie-talkie, but can’t make it out. The voice on the other side of the transmission turns out to be Gus’ mother, Birdie, who made her way to Alaska in search of a cure. It’s the same place they end up in the comics to uncover the truth behind the recent events. With Gus captured by the last men and Jeppered MIA, it might take a bit before they can head that way. Alaska is where the story culminates to reveal the truth behind Gus. Essentially, he is a god or rather the clone of one.

7 Shows Like Sweet Tooth You Must See

In the comics, we’re taken back to 1911 when Dr. James Thacker set off to Alaska to find his brother-in-law, Louis Simpson. He found a home in Alaska and chose to stay, marrying and eventually fathering a child with one of the Inuit women he found there. The child was like Gus, a deer-boy, but was the reincarnation of Tekkietsertok. The being is known as the native god of hunting.

Thacker and his men massacre the Inuits and throw the child into a cave, disturbing the resting place of many ancient native gods. It’s these events that release the plague. All the men ended up dying and the plague would end there. Yet, it returned when all of the gods were cloned into new hybrids once again and started the events of the comic.

This revelation essentially answers the question of what came first, the hybrids or the plague. It could very well be the direction the series is heading in, but there is one thing the series has yet to touch. In the comics, it’s the religious influence that drives the story forward with Dr. Singh finding Gus’ dad’s book. He’s the reason they make their way to Alaska in the first place.

With Birdie already there, we could see another origin for Gus play out, especially since he seemed to be the only bi-product of his mother’s initial experiment. As of now, the other native god clones are absent. They could take a less religious influence and simply see the plague as a result of them playing god.

  • Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Finally Confirms Showrunner and Finds its Cast

Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Finally Confirms Showrunner and Finds its Cast

It looks like the long wait has finally come to an end, as Netflix is moving forward with their live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series. Not only that, but they also found their core cast and creative team for the project. Sleepy Hollow’s Albert Kim has joined the project as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. It’s the first confirmation of his involvement since Illuminerdi dropped the rumor back in February. He’ll work alongside fellow executive producers, Dan Lin, and Lindsey Liberatore. Goi Roseanne Liang and Jabbar Raisani join the project as directors.

They also found their cast with Gordon Cormier playing Aang, the “fun-loving twelve-year-old who just happens to be the Avatar, master of all four elements.” The waterbending siblings’ Katara and Sokka will be played by Kiawentiio and Ian Ousley. Finally, the firebending prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko, also joins the cast in the form of young actor Dallas Liu, who some might know from PEN15. Kim had the following to say in a blog post on the importance of this series heading into live-action:

A live-action version would establish a new benchmark in representation and bring in a whole new generation of fans. This was a chance to showcase Asian and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people. Not just in a cartoon, but in a world that truly
exists, very similar to the one we live in.

It hasn’t been an easy road for the project, as it originally included the creators of the Nickelodeon animated show before they left due to creative differences. The Last Airbender ran for three seasons before it got a sequel in 2012 titled The Legend of Korra. Nickelodeon is currently looking to expand the franchise, with the creators starting a new studio, which will develop films and series for Paramount+. It’ll be interesting to see how the live-action version will adapt the original series, and how different the paths will be from the new studio.

  • ‘Black Widow’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’ Showcase Streaming’s Biggest Hurdle: A Lack of Transparency

‘Black Widow’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’ Showcase Streaming’s Biggest Hurdle: A Lack of Transparency

There’s a major shift in the cinematic landscape happening as we speak. Up until before the pandemic hit, Netflix dominated the streaming landmark. We never found out just how successful their projects were, but saw their subscription numbers continue to grow. Now, Disney+, Apple+, and HBO Max have entered the market. In addition, we’ve entered a year when major motion pictures no longer are theater-only releases. HBO Max and Disney+ Premier Access offer accessibility to popular films in different ways. It’s taken a bite out of their Box Office numbers and shows we’re adapting to a brand-new market.

Disney Plus suffers technical difficulties at launch - Portland Press Herald

Disney+ is a very special case due to Disney doing something rather surprising. They’ve released the opening weekend sales of their Premier Access showings. Yet, they only did it as of Black Widow and never followed up on it. So, its success is up in the air due to no transparency if those numbers have changed at all since the initial opening weekend. Samba TV claimed its US market doubled over the course of the second, which would be insane considering it already made 60M in one weekend. A lawsuit followed by Scarlett Johansson to claim its digital release hampered her initial contract and is still an ongoing discussion to this day.

There’s also the uncertainty surrounding HBO Max. The Suicide Squad opened to a lower than expected Box Office, as it failed to hit its initial $30M prediction. The Delta variant is still considerable across the world and is hampering Box Office results alongside other key factors. HBO Max offers the film for free with a same-day release as theaters.  Once again, we only know how it’s doing in theaters, but not on the service. We are reliant on Samba TV to give us information to guess if it’s a streaming success or not. We commonly only find out when an executive likes to share a success story, like he did today with The Suicide Squad being their second most-watched film during its simultaneous theater release.

Here are all the HBO Max films and shows you can watch | CNN

We’re entering a new generation where a film’s success will be more than its Box Office income and physical sales. Just releasing information during its launch does not give a great estimate of a film’s overall performance. Plus, it seems like these metrics are more a PR move rather than useful information if it’s not communicated consistently. As we enter the new era, it’s time for more transparency. Third parties can only offer estimates, and it’ll get more difficult if this model wants to remain. Plus, digital-only releases like Pixar’s Luca or The Tomorrow War depend on estimated Nielsen ratings for any sign of life. It’ll become more difficult to understand how and why a film deserves a sequel or not. At some point, they can no longer keep these numbers under lock and key.

Relying purely on Box Office numbers could paint their productions in a negative light.  The Suicide Squad is a perfect showcase of that, with headlines calling it a disappointment based on purely one metric. Black Widow’s Box Office is hindered by a lack of Chinese release and a lack of understanding of how Disney+ Premier Access performs for repeat viewers after its initial launch. Even if companies don’t want to provide these metrics, they are essential for understanding a film’s overall performance, as well as relevant for their talent’s individual contracts as the current allegations showcase. The streaming era is here, but the industry refuses to fully embrace all that comes with it.

  • ‘Lucifer’s Joe Henderson Developing Live-Action ‘Pokémon’ Netflix Series

‘Lucifer’s Joe Henderson Developing Live-Action ‘Pokémon’ Netflix Series

The future for the Pokémon series has been quite the question mark in Hollywood. We got the 2019 film Detective Pikachu starring Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith. We never got an official announcement for a sequel or spin-off films after the film had moderate success at the Box Office. After a long bit of silence, the series makes a grand return as Lucifer‘s Joe Henderson is set to write and executive produce a live-action series for Netflix.

The streamer has been on the hunt for big-name franchises to compete with the ever-growing competitive market. They’ve dabbled in Anime for quite some time and even became the home for most of the iconic animated series featuring Ash Ketchum and his Pikachu. There’s no word if they will adapt the Anime into live-action or take a completely new direction to make it stand on its own terms.

Variety points out that the series will be akin to the 2019 film. Sadly, no further details are available but Henderson’s work on the popular Lucifer season makes him a great choice. There’s a lot of potentials to explore the vast world filled with these creatures. Each season ould explore a different region from the games, or they even explore a brand new one.

Pokémon joins the many Anime live-action adaptations that the streamer has been trying to bring to life over the last few years. They’ve been working on bringing Cowboy Bebop, One Piece, and even Gundam to live-action. Only Bebop has entered some form of production with a release remaining uncertain. Here’s hoping this project doesn’t end up in development hell for some time.

  • Zack Snyder’s Turning His ‘Star Wars’ Pitch Into the Netflix Original Sci-Fi ‘Rebel Moon’

Zack Snyder’s Turning His ‘Star Wars’ Pitch Into the Netflix Original Sci-Fi ‘Rebel Moon’

Some time ago, Zack Snyder revealed that he was working on a script for his next project during an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. In it, he revealed that it was originally based on a pitch he made to Lucasfilm that would take place in the iconic Star Wars franchise. He never gave away any details but did state it was heavily inspired by Akira Kurosawa‘s Seven Samurai. The director has always been diverse in how he tackles genres. So, it seemed likely he would follow up on the project now that his Army of the Dead franchise is expanding. Well, luckily it seems the wait won’t be too long. The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that Netflix has gained the rights to his next project, which is now titled, Rebel Moon.

The story will follow a colony at the edge of the galaxy, who are about to face the wrath of a tyrannical regent. Their only hope is a mysterious young woman who will seek out warriors from other planets to take on this mysterious threat. Snyder gave the following statement to share his enthusiasm for taking his next story into space:

This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.

He will direct and produce the film. Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, who helped write Army of the Dead and 300, are on board to bring the space adventure to life. His wife Deborah Snyder will produce the film via Stone Quarry with Eric Newman‘s Grand Electric. It seems likely that similar to Army, this franchise might expand beyond just the singular film, as the director also reveals he spent around two to three years mapping out this distinctive galaxy. It’s an exciting venture, and the streaming service is offering him the creative flexibility to bring his stories to life.

  • New ‘Sandman’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Death

New ‘Sandman’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Death

All the way back in July of 2019, Netflix announced that it had begun development on an adaption of the critically acclaimed graphic novel series, Sandman. The series was written by popular fantasy author Neil Gaiman, known for projects such as American Gods and Good Omens. The series received an eleven-episode greenlight with Allan Heinberg set to write the project and David S. Goyer and Gaiman serving as executive producers on the series. The project will star actor Tom Sturridge as the titular character of Sandman, also known as Dream, alongside a sprawling cast including a few of his siblings, The Endless. One member in particular, who’s quite the fan-favorite, Death. Death is one of Dream’s sisters who represents the aspect of Death.

Death is set to be played by actress Kirby Howell-Baptiste, previously seen in Cruella, Killing Eve, The Good Place, and Barry. Recent photos from the set of Sandman have revealed our first look at the character. The actress is seen sporting the character’s classic black outfit and the iconic ankh necklace she has always worn.

We got our first look at the series during Netflixs’ Geeked Week in which we saw the vast and beautiful sets built for the series and just have much care was put into every detail while bringing the series to life. Sandman currently has no set release date but will be releasing exclusively on Netflix. The series is set to adapt the first two graphic novels in the series, covering Preludes and Nocturnes as well as The Dolls House.

  • Charlize Theron Confirms ‘THE OLD GUARD’ Sequel in Development

Charlize Theron Confirms ‘THE OLD GUARD’ Sequel in Development

It looks like Netflix’s surprise hit film, The Old Guard, won’t be a one-and-done. Actress Charlize Theron, who starred as an immortal warrior in the first film, has confirmed that a second film is happening at the popular streaming service. She explained to Variety that the script for the sequel was already completed, with filming set to begin in the first quarter of next year. While Theron did not reveal the names of those involved in the production, she did confirm that actors Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will return as the couple Joe and Nicky. Not much is known about the sequel’s plot, but the graphic novel the first film was based on does have a sequel, so it’s possible they just adapt the story that’s already been laid out for them.

The Old Guard dropped on Netflix in 2020, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka. As previously mentioned, the film was adapted from the pages of a graphic novel also written by Rucka. The story focused on a U.S. Marine, played by breakout Kiki Layne, who discovers she’s become one of a group of centuries-old warriors on Earth. While Theron never mentioned Layne specifically, it seems likely she’d return for the second installment. While this is the first official news we’ve heard of a sequel, Greg Rucka did express his hopes for one shortly after the first film’s release. It’s possible the script has been in development since around that time, considering it’s already been finished.

  • Leaked ‘Knives Out 2’ Set Photo Offers First Look at Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc

Leaked ‘Knives Out 2’ Set Photo Offers First Look at Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc

It looks like the first set photo has already found its way online from the sequel of Knives Out. Director Rian Johnson revealed yesterday that they started production in Greece showcasing the beautiful shores where they are filming. We only got a tease of the camera that is in use, but nothing on what the all-star cast will be wearing. Luckily, Twitter user @SuperYakiShop shared an image from the set that offers a first glimpse at Daniel Craig‘s returning Benoit Blanc, who is rocking a very different style from the previous film.

    https://twitter.com/SuperYakiShop/status/1409580474083721224

It seems that the hashtag BenoistWatch was born to keep a close eye on his activities on the film’s set. If the first photo of Craig has found its way online, we might see others follow suit. The film has already built up quite a stacked cast that includes Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monae, Edward Norton, and Dave Bautista. Not much is known about the story outside and it’s uncertain if Greece will be used as a stand-in for another location or Blanc truly can’t escape murder even during his vacation.

The Knives Out sequel is an ambitious project. About three months ago, Netflix purchased the franchise for a whopping $400M+. The deal includes the currently filming sequel and a third entry. It’s uncertain if there are plans to expand the franchise beyond a trilogy, but considering the first film made $300M off of a very modest $40M budget, it seems unlikely that Johnson would drop the successful franchise anytime soon. Especially considering he made what is the largest deal in streaming history, which started with a bidding war between Netflix, Apple, and Amazon. It looks like poor Benoist Blanc won’t get a break anytime soon.

  • How Netflix’s ‘Sweet Tooth’ Compares to the Original Comic

How Netflix’s ‘Sweet Tooth’ Compares to the Original Comic

No matter what adaptation you think about, no matter if it is from a comic or video game, there are always changes to fit the original story to the new medium. This trend is evident in the recent Netflix adaption of Jeff Lemire’s beloved Sweet Tooth comic series. It’s a story about a hybrid boy named Gus, who meets a grizzled traveler named Jepp. The two travel through what was once society to uncover the truth behind the virus and answer the question on everyone’s minds: What came first, the Sick or the Hybrids? But, of course, this adaption includes its fair share of changes that improve the story overall and give some characters some incredible depth.

    Tone

One of the most glaring changes from the comic is its dramatic shift in tone. The original comic is quite dark and can get a bit graphic at times. Netflix immersed viewers in a world on the brink of collapse and jumps straight into the lush, colorful forest that Gus would call home. From there on, the show keeps a hopeful tone as we follow Gus and his eagerness to find his mother alongside his companions Jepp and Bear. The show’s shift in tone was one of the best moves the series could’ve made. It still stays true to its source material but holds it in a light that makes it accessible and inclusive for viewers of all ages.

    The Preserve

In the comics, Gus is avid to leave the woods with Jepp and find the preserve, but it’s never given much focus. This time around, the preserve gets an actual origin story. It is run by Aimee, an original character, along with her daughter Wendy. She is a supporting character from the comics who got a revamped origin. The zoo would eventually become a haven for Hybrids. The only place they could hide from the Last Men. By the end of the series, the preserve is attacked and rendered into its original status, a front set up by the Last Men. This way, they can attract hybrid children and capture them for their experiments.

    Becky

Early on in the comics, we meet two characters. They were forced into becoming sex workers and are held captive in an abandoned building, Lucy and Becky. Lucy becomes an integral part of the group, although not to Jepps liking. The series plays around with the newly introduced characters until the final episode finally clarifies their role. Early on, we meet Bear, who is the leader of the Animal Army. He ends up joining Gus and Jepp after her people were against her sparing Jepp’s life. Towards the end of the series, Bear reveals that her real name is Becky, and she once had a sister named, you guessed it, Lucy.

    Lucy

Speaking of, Lucy becomes a mother figure for Becky and the Hybrid children. Yet, the show replaces that role with the original character Aimee. It makes sense to shift that story to a new character who can temporarily take on that role. This way, they can explore the relationships between Lucy and the others in a deeper way. She isn’t just the motherly figure but can take on a much more meaningful role in the group.

    Dr. Singh

Netflix’s adaptation starts with Dr. Singh witnessing the beginning of the end, as the world crumbles around him as the sickness spreads. As such, we grow to sympathize with Singh much more than we do upon meeting him in the comics. Singh is a man trying to keep his ailing wife alive no matter the cost. We get a unique look at the character before he became the character we know from the comics, where he dissects hybrid children. It is all for the sake of finding a cure while at the Preserve.

    Religious Influence

The first thing you notice in the comics is Gus’ father talking about God’s plan. We even see him scribble these “messages from a higher power” into a book that’s later acquired by Doctor Singh, who becomes entranced by its tellings. It would be what pushed the main characters towards Alaska to uncover the true origins of Gus, leading to the resting place of many native gods. The series doesn’t tackle this subject in any way. There isn’t even a hint at Gus’ godlike status in Native religions. No word of Tekkeitsertok is spoken even as the series still seems to be heading in that direction. The ending of the first season hints at his travel towards Alaska, which could get explored in a second season.
