It only took 18 long months, but we finally have an official look at HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us. While September 26th may have been a normal Sunday for many, it marked the eighth annual celebration of “The Last of Us Day” for fans around the globe. Formerly known as “Outbreak Day,” the date of the observance is placed in late September as a reference to the moment the antagonistic infection reached critical mass in the game’s narrative. They used the day to also tease their biggest project yet.
The anniversary is typically accompanied by announcements and merchandising reveals from the game’s developers, Naughty Dog, and this year did not disappoint. Showrunner Neil Druckmann and a variety of others involved in the upcoming live-action series surprised the fandom with the following image:
The picture shows Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, the two iconic protagonists of The Last of Us. While it doesn’t give away much in the form of information on the series, the image does show just how closely HBO’s show will match the video game’s aesthetic. At first glance, it almost appears to be an actual digital screenshot. Although interestingly enough, the imagery of a wrecked plane doesn’t seem to be taken from something that occurred in the 2013 PlayStation Exclusive. It’s possible we’ve just received our first look at one of the new story moments hinted at by Druckmann after the show’s announcement. It looks like they might mix up the story once it releases some time in 2022.
Netflix has a lot riding on the upcoming Cowboy Bebop series. It’s their latest attempt at proving they can successfully adapt an anime into live-action, but also tackle one of the most beloved franchises in the genre. It’s a tall order for any company and it may pave the way for their future success in this new endeavour. They have oddly still played coy on showing us full sequences or a trailer, but they did unveil a very faithful adaptation of the original anime’s opening.
Not only that, but we also got our look at the various supporting characters that will join our ragtag gang of space cowboys. The opening does include some hints at upcoming plotlines and familiar characters. It’s a surprising but clever move to showcase that they care about the original inspiration of the franchise. This way, we get a feeling that they are trying to stay true to what the original offered while still adding their own spin. Netflix also shared the first look at Tamara Tunie as Ana, Mason Alexander Park‘s Gren, Alex Hassell as Vicious, and Elena Satine as Julia.
So far, the series looks very impressive but it’ll be important to get a feeling if the adaptation can stay true to the original. Tomorrow Studio will also showcase their ability with handling these franchises, as they’re going to bring Eiichiro Oda‘s One Piece series to Netflix in the near future. Here’s hoping that we’re entering an age where live-action anime adaptations will work.
Ahead of the premiere of Season 2 of The Witcher, the streaming service has given the series an early renewal. The news came during Netflix’s TUDUM event, where they took to Twitter to announced that the series will also be joined by a brand new family-friendly series in the same world, as well as a second anime feature film. It looks like Netflix is all in on The Witcher franchise and there’s going to be a lot more heading our way in the future.
Netflix has seen some success with the series’ first season and the animated spin-off titled Nightmare of the Wolf. The fact they’re renewing it for a third season alongside multiple expansions really showcases the draw this series has for the streamer. We Might Finally Know Who is Voicing Kro! Wait, Who the Hell is Kro?
Eternals is next up for Marvel Studios and is going to introduce fans to the most obscure group of heroes and villains yet. The trailer revealed one of those villains: the Deviant warlord Kro. To be sure this Kro looks a whole lot different than his comic book counterpart but now we might know why he sounded so much like Dan Stevens. While talking to Collider, Stevens randomly namedropped the character and since only 0.05% of the population knows who it is, it might just be because he’s voicing him.
Hit Monkey Trailer Indicates He’s Set to Square Off Against Some Killer Foes
Marvel’s animated series Hit Monkey is set to debut on Hulu on November 17th and the first trailer for the series gave brief glimpses of a couple of characters that the merc turned macaque might find himself up against: Daredevil baddie Lady Bullseye and Immortal Weapon Fat Cobra! The trailer didn’t really give any context for their roles in the series, so they might be brief cameos for all we know, but they were certainly cool surprises in what was a fairly intriguing trailer.
Marvel Studios Victoria Alonso Gets Promoted
One of the keys to Marvel Studios continued success is that the people who built it beginning with 2008’s Iron Man have stayed the course and followed their vision. One of those key visionaries, Victoria Alonso, who Kevin Feige called “one of the most dynamic, candid and accessible executives in the industry”, just got herself a new job within the Studio. Alonso is now President of Physical and Post Production, Visual Effects, and Animation Production and we have no idea what that means but it’s great to see Alonso continue to climb the ladder of the company she helped shape.
Here We Go! ‘Super Mario’ Animated Film Has a Bonkers Cast List
One major announcement coming out of Nintendo Direct was the voice cast Illumination’s 2022 Super Mario. The animated film will hit U.S. theaters December 21st, 2022 and has a fully loaded baked potato of a cast. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day will voice Mario and Luigi, respectively, while Anya Taylor-Joy will voice Peach. Seth Rogen, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key and more will bring other characters from the iconic franchise to life.
In a Murphy’s Multiverse exclusive, we reported that Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman’s unknown spy character will be sticking around the MCU in future projects. The character, described as a Fury-esque spy, will first be seen doing some shady work in Secret Invasion. Fury. The Contessa. Now this spymaster. ‘Secret Invasion’ Will Be Quake-free
Chloe Bennet will not be reprising her role as Daisy Johnson/Quake in the MCU…at least not yet…and probably not ever. The star of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. took time out of her day to break the news to her fans via Twitter. Nobody is exactly sure why she did it nor why anyone thought she was in Secret Invasion in the first place, but let’s not facts get in the way of fan theories. On a positive note, she has yet to deny that she will be joining the MCU as Mephisto, so keep your fingers crossed.
After a long wait, we’re finally getting the third and final entry of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. James Gunn will return to the director’s chair after his time with DC’s The Suicide Squad. The best part, we’re also getting a Disney+ Christmas Special ahead of the third film’s release. Gunn did confirm in July that it’s going to connect with Vol. 3, but it seems some curious secrets will be revealed in the upcoming special.
Of course, he doesn’t reveal what exactly that means, but the special will likely connect Thor: Love and Thunder with the third film. So, we’ll get our first hint a the main plotline that will drive the Guardians on their final journey. The secrets in question might also reference some curious revelations between the team, such as the origin of Rocket. There were some hints that the upcoming threequel will focus on Gamora and Nebula, which could come into play as well.
There has been a dry spell when it comes to the upcoming prequel series House of the Dragons. It’ll explore the time when the House Targaryen’s ruled. The series will have five leads, which we already got a glimpse of Matt Smith‘s Prince Daemon and Emma D’Arcy‘s Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in some leaked set photos. It looks like they finally rounded out the cast, as Deadline is reporting seven new additions to the cast. One curious addition to the list is Preacher‘s Graham McTavish, who confirmed his involvement back in May. The series will see the addition of Wakefield‘s Ryan Corr, Devs‘ Jefferson Hall, Miss Marple‘s David Horovitch, Chernobyl‘s Matthew Needham, Hamilton‘s Gavin Spokes, andGood Omens‘ Bill Patterson.
The series will take place 300 years before the original Game of Thrones occurs. So, it won’t be shackled by characters or storylines set up in the HBO success story. We still haven’t gotten a trailer or tease when it’ll release, but there’s a chance it is still busy filming. These casting announcements have been involved for some time, as McTavish confirmed his involvement a few months ago. HBO has high hopes to bring back the franchise, as its only one of many spinoffs that are currently in development. There’s a lot riding on its success to confirm that the Game of Thrones franchise still has a big future ahead.
Showrunner Russel T. Davies is returning to Doctor Who. Davies will take over showrunner duties from Chris Chibnall who will depart the series in 2023. He is, of course, responsible for the show’s revival back in 2005. Davies is also credited for its ever-expanding popularity, catapulting it into a global phenomenon. Along with helping to relaunch Doctor Who, Davies created the fan-favorite Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Davies ultimately left Doctor Who in 2009, which is when Steven Moffat took over.
Davies is returning just in time to celebrate Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary, and to say goodbye to the latest Doctor as Jodie Whittaker will soon exit. Whittaker’s Doctor will feature in one more six-part series and three specials for 2022.
On returning to the series, Davies expressed his excitement. “I’m beyond excited to be back on my favorite show,” he said. “There’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm. I’m still a viewer for now.”
It looks like HBO Max will be putting the spotlight on DC Comics’ rich history and influential legacy as part of a three-part documentary series. Oscar and Emmy-nominated director, and producer, Leslie Iwerks, will act as showrunner alongside Greg Berlanti. It’ll explore the early years of the company and how it evolved into the comic book giant we know today.
HBO Max is no stranger to DC, as the streaming service already features a number of titles including Doom Patrol, Titans, and the upcoming Peacemaker series. All that is in additional to working closely with Warner Bros. films. With comics assets as popular as they have become, it makes sense that DC would want to celebrate its successes and relive some of the world’s most beloved characters and stories. Iwerks previously received an Outstanding Nonfiction Special Emmy nomination for her work on The Pixar Story, a documentary that took audiences behind the scenes of the the animation legend. She will exeuctive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Co-executive producers are Mark Catalena, Rachael Jerahian, and Jonathan Gabay. The series will be co-directed by Iwerks alongside Catalena.
Last September, it was announced that Game of Thrones showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, were developing an adaption of The Three-Body Problem for Netflix. The adaption was the first project announced by the duo under their new overall mega deal with Netflix. Since the news first hit, details regarding the series adaption have been rather sparse. We know that Derek Tsang (Better Days) will direct the drama, and actress Eiza Gonzalez will lead the series. Details beyond those, though, have been slim… until today.
We here at Murphy’s Multiverse have a small bit of news we can share, though, with fans of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi book trilogy The Three-Body Problem. The Netflix series is currently looking to cast to cast unspecified roles.
The first role calls for a Female Lead between the ages of 25-35. This actor will need to be of Chinese heritage, a scientist and a fluent English speaker. It’s a lead role with options. Should the series stay close to the book and, assuming Eiza isn’t portraying a different version of the character, this could perhaps be for the role of Ye Wenjie. (This, of course, is merely a guess!)
The second role calls for a Female Lead between the ages of 70-85. This actor will need to be of Chinese heritage, a scientist and a fluent English speaker. This is also for a lead role with options.
The third role is for a Female Lead between the ages of 25-35. The actor will need to be of Hispanic/Latino heritage and speak English fluently. The character is described as a scientist and the role is a lead role with options.
The fourth role is for Male Lead between the ages of 25-35. The actor will need to be of Indian/South Asian heritage and British. The character is said to be powerful, charismatic and clever. This is for a lead role with options.
The fifth role is for a Male Lead between the ages of 25-35. The casting grid calls specifically for a Black actor. The character is described as a scientist, who isn’t necessarily a nerd, who is smart and laid back. He’s also said to have leading man charisma, who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances.
The final two roles being cast are for Male Leads, both between the ages of 50-70. These are only described as Military/Ex- Military.
The Three-Body Problem is based on the book series by . The series includes Remembrance of Earth’s Past, The Dark Forest and Death’s End.
Production on The Three-Body Problem is expected to kick off in November in the UK.
It looks like the world hasn’t had enough of Tiger King, as Netflix has announced that sequel to the original 2020 documentary. The real-life story of a man known as Joe Exotic and the bizarre happenings surrounding his time as the owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park (or G.W. Zoo for short). The documentary is eyeing a late 2021 release. The announcement was hidden in the video teasing Netflix as the “Home of True Crime.” There are no details where the focus will be on the upcoming continuation. It’ll likely continue exploring the original story and expanding what has happened since its initial release. Teaser footage already is hinting at some more insanity.
The upcoming continuation will kick off their new slate of real-life documentaries that include The Puppet Master, Hunting the Ultimate Conman, The Tinder Swindler, Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King, and Bad Vegan. Netflix has made a name for itself by exploring darker topics through a variety of documentaries. It’s great to see them continue building upon their success, but it does open up the question of a sequel to Tiger King was truly needed.
It was released just around the time the pandemic started, which gave it quite the boost in viewership yet the insanity also led to some real-world consequences. It makes you wonder what else they could explore within that story, as it would imply some more details have found their way into the world. We’ll get a clearer picture once the first full trailer for the sequel gets released.
