‘Olaf Presents’ is the Latest Example of Disney+’s Creative Freedom

The upcoming Disney+ series Olaf Presents features the Frozen franchise’s famous snowman sidekick retelling classic Disney tales in bite-sized episodes. At a press conference for the series, Olaf Presents producer, director and star Josh Gad all praised the creative freedom the show enjoyed. Producer Jennifer Newfield discussed how “Let’s Play” was a guiding creative concept:

“Being able to play I mean, I think I think that was throughout the entire production is let’s play. And I think that our collaboration efforts come in the way that we went about it was in that way. And we knew that we could take liberties which is not often the case, especially in animation, we have to be very precise with our decisions. And I think the playfulness of the whole the whole way through from the script, writing to the recording sessions, all the way to animators really being able to kind of take the reins a little bit and yeah, be able to just enjoy that freedom is so nice.”

    Jennifer Newfield

Gad expressed that one of his favorite parts about voicing the titular character is that the creators just “let [him] go crazy.” Director Hyrum Osmond doubled down on the creators’ philosophy in making the show:

“But I think one of the things is so great, you know, we talked about the inspiration of these films, but it’s also just taking the liberty to not take ourselves too seriously. And I think that is just so fun. And especially when you start telling these things, from the perspective of this, the sort of naive Olaf, right, like the way he sees it. I mean, you can’t help but have some of these fun moments.”

    Hyrum Osmond

The Frozen spin-off isn’t the only new Disney+ animated series to apparently be allowed extensive creative freedom. Marvel Studios’ What If… ? head writer A.C. Bradley often said similar things about her experience:

“When I took the job, one of my rules was let’s be free. We’re in the multiverse — we should be as free as can be and go and run into the wild, into the stories the movies will never do, into the stories the TV shows will never do, and show both Disney and the fans all the possibilities of these characters.”

    A.C. Bradley

Maybe Olaf Presents is another hint as to how Disney+ intends to handle some of its original series, particularly animated ones. Allowing writers and actors to simply have fun with a project can undoubtedly be rewarding for the studio and audience alike.

Olaf Presents starts streaming on the platform on Disney+ Day on November 12.

  • REVIEW: ‘Olaf Presents’ is a Lovable Recycling Project

REVIEW: ‘Olaf Presents’ is a Lovable Recycling Project

Olaf Presents is the latest in Disney’s obsession with rehashing and recycling the bottomless financial well of its animated films. Despite the lingering question of what exactly is the goal or purpose of the mini-series, it does manage to be genuinely delightful. Josh Gad’s Olaf of the Frozen franchise fame is a golden nugget of a character and is special enough that his overuse and excessive commercialization can be forgiven enough to truly enjoy this series. With its home on Disney+ within the complete collection of the films, the talking snowman “presents” places it in a much-needed external context. Instead of being a cute, but empty isolated concept, it feels much more like a worthy piece of the larger animated Disney film tapestry.

With each episode sporting a runtime of under two minutes, the length of each mini-story is perfect. It’s enough to get a laugh, but it ends almost exactly when it starts to get old. In fact, everything about Olaf Presents is miniature. The writing comes in super abrupt chunks and the editing emphasizes it. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it narrative sections combined with the harsh edit to the next one to two-second section is quite funny. Gad is as triumphant as the silly sidekick as ever, and it’s one of those rare castings that seem irreplaceable. Gad and Olaf in Olaf Presents only need to find a way to be funny in micro-bursts, and they can do that on repeat in this series.

Much of the humor comes from Olaf’s more removed takes on some of Disney’s most classic animated movies. He describes scenes or plot points in ways that the “ordinary” person might. The dark, dramatic, and detailed description of Mufasa’s death in The Lion King that emphasizes just how brutal the famous scene actually is is a perfect example. Our goofy snowman surely makes people think, “Look! He’s saying what we’ve always thought!”

Poking fun at its own films is a refreshing move from Disney at least. The mini-series is able to call out some outdated, overly corny, or otherwise laughable themes and storylines that work best for older movies, such as 1989’s The Little Mermaid. It is interesting, though, how Olaf Presents can make an audience laugh at the absurdities in Disney movies by taking cues from the Frankenstein’s Monster of Disney movies’ culmination of their absurdities.

The series is a nice way to promote classic films by using a more recent but future classic as a vehicle to reintroduce them either to a younger audience who did not grow up on some of the older animated classics or to an older audience that has left them behind. The presentations are undoubtedly far less enjoyable—if at all—to a person who hasn’t seen the movie being presented. So, to that extent, it’s unclear if Olaf Presents can persuade a newbie to scroll to another part of Disney+ to watch a feature-length film for context.

Olaf Presents is honestly a funny, cute, and amusing collection of bite-sized episodes for the Disney animated film fan. Olaf’s humor will not disappoint his fan base and it’s surely more than enough to make Olaf-indifferent audiences laugh. Poking fun at classic, and even more recent, movies for about a minute and a half proves to be entertaining. However, those who aren’t already familiar with the movies may not get much out of the series. While the series is a blatant recycling project that highlights ongoing Disney’s death grip on its iconic properties, the fact that Olaf Presents finds itself as a tiny piece within the Disney+ platform makes it feel like a more inspired addition to the conglomerate.

Olaf Presents premieres exclusively on Disney+ on Nov. 12.

TEEN TITANS VOL. 3: DEATH OF THE FAMILY | DC

In a move not even the most hardcore DC fans can explain, the HBO Max streaming series Titans is coming back for not only a 4th season, but also a 5th. ‘The Incal’ adapation finds its director in Taika Waititi

At a time when Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune is being hailed as a major cinematic accomplishment, The Incal adaptation is a few steps closer to having its own time to shine on the big screen, with Taika Waititi at the helm. What do these projects have in common? Well, a lot. Alejandro Jodorowsky is famous for having unsuccessfully tried to adapt and film Frank Herbert‘s 1965 Dune in the mid-1970s. After that, one of his projects was a graphic novel series written by himself and originally illustrated by Jean Giraud: The Incal. A project that includes and expands the concepts and artwork from the abandoned Dune film.

Laurie Holden as Crimson Countess in ‘The Boys’ Season 3

Amazon struck gold with its adaption of Garth Ennis’ The Boys, a world where the superheroes aren’t kept in check and act as they please. In the upcoming season, things are set to get even crazier than before with the arrival of Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, and superhero team Payback. But these won’t be the only members of the team making their way to Vought this season, as Laurie Holden is already set to debut as Crimson Countess, their play on Scarlet Witch.

  • Closer Look at New ‘Hawkeye’ Costumes Offered in Magazine Cover

Closer Look at New ‘Hawkeye’ Costumes Offered in Magazine Cover

We’re only a few weeks away from the release of Hawkeye‘s on Disney+. The series takes place before Christmas, as Jeremy Renner‘s Clint Barton finds himself mentoring Hailee Steinfeld‘s Kate Bishop after she paraded through New York City as Ronin. Some time ago, we got the tease of a comic-accurate costume for Clint. It was a set photo that didn’t offer a clearer picture, but an official magazine cover for Lowdown Magazine offered a closer look at it alongside Bishop, who is sporting the same costume she had in the latest poster.

Clint’s costume was also included in the poster, but as he was shooting an arrow from the side we didn’t get a good look at it. So, this cover confirms that he is wearing the one we saw leaked through a set photo all that time ago, which is heavily inspired by Matt FractionsMy Life as a Weapon run. Her costume seems to integrate different designs, but the detail of her having the arrow in a different shade of purple is a nice touch.

Of course, you can’t include both Hawkeyes without Lucky having a prominent role. He’ll likely be the star of the show, but we don’t know if he might even get an entire episode from his perspective. The series seems strongly inspired by Die Hard, which is a perfect match for the most grounded member of the Avengers. It’ll be interesting if it keeps that inspiration throughout, or even adds some unique flourishes.

  • Emilio Estevez Won’t Return for ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’ Season 2 After All

Emilio Estevez Won’t Return for ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’ Season 2 After All

Here’s a rather surprising bit of news. It seems that Gordon Bombay actor Emilio Estevez is exiting the second season of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. After the series brought back an unlikely team of kids to play hockey, he was one of the key cast members returning from the original 1992 film. Yet, it seems he won’t be returning to the upcoming season due to disputes over COVID vaccination requirements. The series has adopted mandatory policies for its cast and crew. It seems he declined to assure he would comply just as the scripts were being written until the studio decided not to exercise his option. As such, they are going to rewrite the scripts without him. Yet, there are also hints that creative differences also played a key factor.

Zone A vaccination mandate isn’t new to the industry, and we might see many more people refuse to join productions if this continues. Netflix has it mandatory on all their productions while Disney TV Studios is only rolling it out on new and some existing projects. So, we’ll see if this starts affecting other productions moving forward and what it might mean for the industry, as the world still continues to recover from COVID.

‘Us Again,’ ‘Nona’ and ‘Twenty Something’ Among 84 Animated Short Films Qualified for 2022’s Oscars

The Oscars pull in a lot of eyes from around the world. It’s about celebrating films, no matter if it’s an animated film, drama, comedy, or musical. Among the many categories is also the famous celebrated short films. There’s still some time until the event happens, but it seems that a qualifying list has found its way online. CartoonBrew shared the qualifying list which contains 84 short films up for the nomination.

They do name comparison to last year’s 96 nominated shorts, which, to be fair, was an all-time record. The qualification period was also shortened by two months due to the pandemic. The list contains quite a few different shorts from all over the world like Angakusajaujuq: The Shaman’s Apprentice, Barking Orders, The Boy and the Mountain, Monster Pets: A Hotel Transylvania Short, and many more. Disney+ is also represented with its shorts Us Again, as well as the Sparkshorts Nona and Twenty Something.

There are three ways to get qualified for an Oscar nomination. It needs to be publicly exhibited in one of the U.S. cities under specific conditions. They can also take home an award at one of the designated festivals, or even a Student Academy Award. You can check the full list by clicking here.

  • Hailee Steinfeld Was Marvel Studios’ “Go-to-Girl” for the Role of Kate Bishop

Hailee Steinfeld Was Marvel Studios’ “Go-to-Girl” for the Role of Kate Bishop

For well over a year, fans rode a roller coaster as rumors of Hailee Steinfeld signing on as Kate Bishop ebbed and flowed. She was in; she was out; she signed on the dotted line; the project was delayed and might have cost her the role; the project was delayed and allowed her to land the role. In reality, nobody knew what to believe and it wasn’t until we got the first photos and videos of Steinfeld on set that anyone was sure she had landed the role of Bishop in Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Hawkeye.

Hawkeye is set to stream (beginning with a 2-episode premiere) on November 24th and from the footage we’ve seen so far, it looks like Steinfeld is not only a great fit for the role but truly gets the role. According to Marvel Studios executive producer Trinh Tran, even though fans rode the rumor mill roller coaster, the studio always knew they wanted Steinfeld for the role.

I remember the very first day when [executive producer and MCU mastermind Kevin Feige] and I sat with Hailee to talk about it. We were just like, ‘This is Kate Bishop.’ When you read the comics, you get that energy from Kate — that wit and those smarts. And meeting Hailee, you see she’s so incredibly talented. Just look at the body of work she’s accomplished at such a young age. We knew having her be a part of the MCU one way or another would be very exciting, but when we started talking about this particular project and this character, she just became our go-to girl.

As Tran says, Steinfeld is a huge star at just 24 years old and brings with her to Marvel Studios an already incredibly well-established fan base of young people. Steinfeld is very much primed to become one of the faces of the MCU’s future and it certainly doesn’t hurt Marvel Studios to have one of those faces be as instantly recognizable as hers. Bishop’s entrance into the MCU will mark the appearance of yet another comic book Young Avenger and as that number continues to grow, it’s only a matter of time until those characters get their own property, one that will certainly see Bishop in the lead. When you think about that future, you can understand why Steinfeld was always Marvel Studios go-to-girl and why they were willing to do what they had to do to find a way to bring her into the MCU.

  • Writers Revealed for First Three Episodes of ‘Hawkeye’

Writers Revealed for First Three Episodes of ‘Hawkeye’

Hawkeye premieres with 2 episodes on Disney+ in little over 3 weeks. Up until now, most of what we have seen from the show has been the Christmas Holiday atmosphere it is leaning into. It’s quite clear from the trailers that Clint Barton’s past as Ronin will drag him along with Kate Bishop into a conflict with the Tracksuit Mafia just before Christmas. As we get closer to the release date there will be more details updated and released about the technical aspects of the show. The Writer’s Guild of America West has updated their site to show the credited writers for the first three episodes.

Episode 1 has been written by series Head Writer Jonathan Igla. He is most well known for his 2010 to 2015 run on Mad Men from Season 4 to Season 7. He also worked on Sorry for Your Loss, a bereavement-focused drama series executive produced by and starring Elizabeth Olsen. Writing Episode 2 is the newest name to be revealed from the Hawkeye writers’ room. Like Igla, Elisa Climent’s credits seem to be a mix of drama and comedy with the aforementioned Sorry For Your Loss, and a dark comedy about a female con artist called Imposters. Finally, for Episode Three, the duo Katrina Mathewson and Tanner Bean who previously announced their involvement on Twitter in March 2020 and who similarly have drama and comedy credits including a previous holiday film Christmas Ever After.

With the glimpses of Rogers the Musical and the seriousness of Clint trying to get back to his family before Christmas it seems like Hawkeye tread the balance between comedy and drama as the the writers’ previous credits seem to indicate. As for how the series itself plays out, we’ll have to wait and see as it premieres towards the end of this month and concludes close to Christmas.
