The numbers are beginning to roll in and it looks like Disney’s Encanto will take the top spot at the box office this weekend. The film pulled in $11 million on Friday, with its 3-day settling around $30 million with the potential to reach $45 million over the Thanksgiving weekend. While that’s not a huge opening compared to life pre-Pandemic, the Thanksgiving box office is up from last year.
Expected to come in second place is Ghostbusters: Afterlife with $36.3 million. That’s with $9.75 million on Friday with $26 million for the weekend. That brings its domestic haul to approximately $88 million in its second outing. With little competition, Afterlife should go on to cross the $100 million domestic mark in the coming weeks. Following Afterlife is the newest release from Ridley Scott, House of Gucci, earning $22.5 million over the five day weekend.
Marvel Studios’ Eternals finishes in fourth place with $11 million, bringing its total to $150.3 million domestically. Finally, in fifth place is the latest Resident Evil movie: Welcome to Raccoon City. That film, unfortunately, looks to be a box office disaster with just $8.85 million over the Thanksgiving weekend.
‘Loki’ Cast Members Getting into the Madness of ‘Doctor Strange 2’
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is undergoing extensive reshoots which are designed, as star Bandicoot Snugglesnatch explained, to help realize the full potential of the film. Whether that means getting people on set who couldn’t be there before, when the film was shooting in the UK, or adding/reshooting some things, it’s ultimately a positive part of the filmmaking process for a pro like Sam Raimi and part of Raimi’s vision for this film apparently includes having Loki, Mobius and Sylvie in it. A recent IMDB update shows that stunt doubles for the actors behind those characters have recently joined the production. Additionally, Owen Wilson has been spotted in Los Angeles, a place he does NOT frequent unless he’s working. We’ll see how mad it all gets next May.
‘The Marvels’ Wraps Principal Photography
As the Doctor Strange sequel keeps on keeping on, the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, has wrapped principal photography after just shy of 3 months of work. Ironically enough, after going the entire duration of filming without a leak, a few set photos leaked the day after filming wrapped. The film is now slated for a February 17th, 2023 release.
‘AMTW:Q’ WPAWAWNSITCFN2Y
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania wrapped production as well and will not sit in the can for nearly 2 years before it releases in July of 2023. Of course it’ll undergo some additional photography at some point, which will inspire some intrepid internet personality to claim it’s a disaster and that the entire film is being reworked, but such is the cycle. It’s rumored that by the time the film does hit theaters, Rudd will look exactly the same as he did when filming began.
Netflix Go Going for a Power Rangers Universe
After crashing and burning with the launch of their Millar-verse when Jupiter’s Legacy turned out to be D.O.A., Netflix isn’t giving up. The streaming network, in an effort to keep up with the competition, is working on mapping out a Power Rangers Cinematic Universe, full of interconnected shows and films. Dragon shit!!
Chris Pratt to Americanize Italy’s Greatest Hero in Upcoming Film Adaptation
One of the more original indie comics of 2021, Nocterra, is now in the pipeline to be adapted at Netflix. Nocterra, created by Scott Snyder of Batman fame, is a horror series that tells of a dystopian future where the lights all went out and a lot of bad shit started happening to people, including being turned into terrifying monsters. It truly is a wonderful book that you should check out before it gets turned into a trash series on Netflix.
More Blade Runner on the Way
Ridley Scott was a little grumpy this week, but in one of his kinder moments, he did mention that he had pitched a 10-episode season of a Blade Runner live-action series. It was a little confusing because on one hand, he railed against millennials while, on the other hand, realizing that streaming is the future of entertainment. With an Alien series already in development, it looks like 2 of Scott’s most iconic franchises will continue to live on and that’s almost certainly a good thing.
‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Cast Gets Recast During Casting for Dead Boy Detectives
The Doom Patrol spinoff series, Dead Boy Detectives, found it’s 3 leads this week. The new crew, who will replace the crew that appeared on the most recent season of Doom Patrol, is comprised of George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri and Kassius Nelson. I have no idea who these actors or characters are, but I think JJ liked them.
Earlier this week, Warner Bros. announced it plans to re-release Dune for a limited IMAX run in December. The news came as the film was on the cusp of hitting $100 million at the domestic box office. With the re-release planned, it was all but certain the film would achieve the feat, it was just a matter of when. And as it turns out, Dune was able to hit $100 million domestically without the help of the re-release.
#Dune broke the $100M mark at the domestic #boxoffice on Thanksgiving THU and is on track for about $2.2M for the wknd lifting cume to $102M making it the top grossing movie among all WB/HBOMax releases.
The numbers are in and Dune is on track for $2.2 million this weekend. That is enough to bring the film’s domestic haul to $102 million. In the Pandemic-era, crossing the $100-million mark at the domestic box office is an impressive feat. Gone are the days where $200 million is the norm. In fact, to date, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Venom: Let There be Carnage are the only releases this year to hit that milestone. While a $200 million domestic haul is still up in the air, Dune now retains the title of the top-grossing movie release among all Warner Bros. and HBO Max releases for 2021.
With its planned IMAX re-release still set for Dec. 3, it’s likely Dune will see an uptick in its domestic haul. As it stands, IMAX screenings brought in $50 million of the film’s overall domestic gross. Releasing the film back in IMAX should help boost that number even more.
With the first press screening reportedly taking place next week, the final cut of Spider-Man: No Way Home has been prepared and, thanks to a new report, we know exactly how long it will be…down to the second. According to Big Screen Leaks, an account that leaks information about projects seen on a big screen, the threequel will clock in at 148 minutes and 1 second.
As always, reported runtimes include mid and post credit scenes and the credits, so you can expect the film to be a little closer to 2 hours and 15 minutes in length, but the reported 2 hour and 28 minute runtime places it just ahead of Captain America: Civil War’s 2 hour and 27 minutes and just behind Avengers: Infinity War’s 2 hours and 29 minutes and as Marvel Studios fourth longest film behind Avengers: Endgame (3:01), Eternals (2:37) and the aforementioned Infinity War. No Way Home will be the longest MCU Spider-Man film, with Homecoming having clocked in 2 hours and 13 minutes and Far From Home running 2 hours and 9 minutes. It will also be the longest running Spider-Man movie to date, with only The Amazing Spider-Man 2 coming close at 2 hours and 22 minutes. With so many characters sharing the stage and so much to do as the final film of a trilogy, it’s no surprise we’re seeing an extended runtime.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit U.S. theaters December 17th.
Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster, Eternals, is headed to Disney Plus soon.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, still Eternals is proving to be a hit for Marvel Studios. Eternals hit theaters in November and has gone on to amass over $300 million at the worldwide box office. The film is on track to surpass Black Widow‘s theatrical run with a potential $425 million global box office haul – an impressive feat with no China release. Now it looks set to hit Disney Plus in January.
A new report from Streaming Guider states the film will hit the streaming service on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2022. That’s approximately 70 days following its theatrical run, about the same amount of time between Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ launch on the service.
Director Chloé Zhao recently took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes image from the first test screening for the film. As it occurred early on during the pandemic, the test screening was held outside in a parking lot. This allowed viewers to be socially distanced and still enjoy the film.
AsDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness enters reshoots, it now appears as though Tom Hiddleston, Own Wilson and Sophia DiMartino will return in the sequel. Earlier this month, reports surfaced suggesting that part of the reasoning behind the extensive reshoots was to add cameos from a Marvel Television series. Of course, said cameos were not exactly named, although earlier reports suggest Captain Carter will make her live-action debut, while Loki will return alongside Sylvie.
Now, thanks to IMDb, it looks as though Loki and Sylvie – along with Mobius, will indeed return for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Stunt performers for Hiddleston, Wilson and DiMartino have been added to the cast of the forthcoming film on IMDb.
Just recently, the Doctor himself, Benedict Cumberbatch commented on the reshoots. The actor noted they were ultimately to enhance the film further. “We’re in the middle of reshoots and we’re working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film,” he explained. “Bits that we want to do better but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because of logistics, COVID, etc.”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters May 6, 2022.
Here’s a rather interesting surprise. We know that Marvel has been quite busy lending its license to countless producers to bring their various franchises to life in new and interesting ways in the gaming market. It’s the same deal that brought us the Insomniac Spider-Man games, Crystal Dynamics work on Marvel’s Avengers, and Eidos Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy. These are just the ones that have been released but expectations are high for upcoming announcements. It looks like the company EG7 has revealed it is currently involved in developing a AAA MMORPG that takes place in the Marvel Universe.
The sneaky inclusion was pointed out by @mmmmmmmmiller. Dimensional Ink Studios, which is located in Austin Texas, is currently developing the project with Jack Emmert spearheading the project. He’s currently the lead behind DC Universe Online and has also blended his hand in the development of City of Heroes. It’s a project that is planned for the long term. So, we might not find out about it in more detail until 2024 at this rate.
Marvel Studios is trying its hands at quite a few different projects as of late. It’ll be interesting to see what an MMORPG has to offer, as it could either be closer in design to DC Universe Online. So, you can create your hero and roam the streets alongside classic Marvel heroes and villains with a bunch of players interacting. Final Fantasy XIV Online has been quite popular as of late and it may attract a new kind of audience to the popular franchise.
It came as a shock to many that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had to restart a new wave of reshoots. Yet, it’s also quite a regular occurrence for any modern production to try to nail a few additional shots and make up for things they couldn’t make work due to scheduling conflicts. There were also some rumors hinting that the reshoots were a way for them to add a few more cameos that didn’t manage due to scheduling conflicts.
Luckily, in the latest edition of Empire, leading star Benedict Cumberbatch offered a little insight into why they were tackling the reshoots, especially with how extensive they were teased to be. He goes on to highlight logistics and COVID as reasoning, but also that they want to “realize the full potential of the film,” which is a rather curious remark. Here’s the full quote:
We’re in the middle of reshoots and we’re working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film – bits that we want to do better but also bits that were just impossible to do on the day because of logistics, COVID, etc. We were so delayed in production because of that. Luckily, not during production too much. Although everything is just a little slower.
Benedict Cumberbatch
The quote is certainly curious as it does add that a multiversal storyline wants to “realize its full potential.” So, it adds to the rumors that they are likely adding a few more appearances, especially with the reference to COVID as a major cause. Here’s hoping that recent developments don’t affect the current production, which is currently eyeing a May release.
It looks like Encanto has taken the top spot over the Thanksgiving weekend with a Thursday preview earning of $5.8M. Though, while even House of Gucci is shaping up to be connecting with audiences with a strong showing of $3.4M in previews, it’s still a much weaker overall ticket sale in comparison to pre-COVID times. Still, Disney’s animated musical
Encanto is currently on its way towards a $13.3M cume by Friday, which puts it on a good track on a strong weekend. Especially with a softer Disney budget of $120M. Lady Gaga is also proving her box office prowess once more and could make the $75M quite a popular film. Dramas have been fighting their way through the box office since the pandemic, which makes sense as audiences are going to be way more selective in their viewing choices.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City also opened over the weekend and earned around $1M in its previews with a Friday gross of $3.5M expected. It’s a cheap production at around $25M but has not been strongly advertised and gone under most people’s radar up until its release. It’s still a bizarre decision by Sony not to invest in such an iconic gaming intellectual property that has proven successful in the past.
Still, Ghostbusters: Afterlife continues to pull in good numbers and now stands at $63.3M domestically. Eternals now stands at a still impressive $142.7M. While hard to compare to pre-pandemic times, the numbers are still there showing that people are slowly going back to cinemas and House of Gucci‘s performance might also add some hope that dramas are back in the upswing as well for stronger performances moving forward.
Not too long ago, we learned that production has wrapped on The Marvels. The Captain Marvel sequel will expand its cast in a new way, as it’s no longer just a story about Carol Danvers but also her new fellow Marvel’s, Iman Vellani‘s Kamala Khan and Teyonah Parris‘ Monica Rambeau. The official logo already teased the blend of all three icons and it seems that trend continues in the newly shared crew merch by prosthetic makeup artist Kate Wakefields on her Instagram page.
There have been rumors that the character of Blue Marvel is potentially being included in the production, which would be fitting given the sequel’s new naming. It might be quite the leak if he was included in crew merch, which has a tendency to find their way online at some point. So, they’d likely just focus on the three characters that have been officially announced.
