‘Harley Quinn’s Liza Singer Joins Marvel Studios as an Animation Director

Marvel Studios is just like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It continues to expand at an exponential rate and it seems they’ve added one more talent to their repertoire. Liza Singer, who has worked as a storyboard revisionist and artist for projects like Harley Quinn, Disenchantment, and DC Super Hero Girls, took to Twitter to announce she joined Marvel Studios in the role of director. She previously directed Paramount+’s The Harper House. So, she’s no stranger to the brand and is currently working on a feature High in the Clouds for Netflix and Gaumont Animation.

    https://twitter.com/LaserSinger/status/1442539635322671105

Marvel Studios is truly all in with their upcoming animation projects, and her inclusion might hint that they’ve already had a few stories mapped out. We’re still waiting for any official announcements, which might happen during the upcoming Disney+ Day, but the timings are very different when it comes to animation. If they are starting work on it now, it might not see the light of day until 2024.

What If..? is still currently airing on Disney+ with only two more episodes left to go. It’s uncertain if they’ll stick to this very distinct animation style or try out different ones as they expand. Hopefully, it is the latter, as it’s the one advantage the medium has and could help diversify Marvel Studio’s portfolio. There’s also the question if every project will be considered canon, or they’ll also create franchises that exist in the multiverse separate from the MCU.

  • ‘What If…?’ Funko Leak May Hint at Ultron’s New Name

‘What If…?’ Funko Leak May Hint at Ultron’s New Name

At the end of the latest What If…? episode, the multiverse’s next challenge has finally shown its fangs. Ultron, in the body of Vision, appeared before Thor and the Watcher. Even the almighty being has no idea where and why this version of the sentient AI arrived. His design also raised some questions, such as if he is still Ultron or does he go by the name he gave his Vibranium-based body. A potential Funko Pop leak may have given us a clearer picture of what the Infinity Stone-wearing robot will be going by the Supreme Leader.

The leak comes from the Instagram account mariobros612, which has given reliable information in the past, such as the Doctor Strange sequel Funko leak back in July. It seems that the Ultron-inspired Funko will only be available at New York Comic-Con. Sadly, we don’t get an official look at it yet, as he may have his visor up or down, but Funko hasn’t been disappointed with their latest additions.

We got our first glimpse at the character back in April and he’s been featured on the What If…? poster for some time, but we were only given glimpses. The name Supreme Leader would match his Tony Stark-inspired ego, especially after gaining all the Infinity Stones. The “Supreme” part of the name was first noticed back in June, but most believed that it was a hint at a version of Captain America that joined HYDRA. It’s fun to see how some early leaks come to fruition later down the line.

The Pulse: Collecting the Biggest News of the Past Week (Sep 20)

We Might Finally Know Who is Voicing Kro! Wait, Who the Hell is Kro?

Eternals is next up for Marvel Studios and is going to introduce fans to the most obscure group of heroes and villains yet. The trailer revealed one of those villains: the Deviant warlord Kro. To be sure this Kro looks a whole lot different than his comic book counterpart but now we might know why he sounded so much like Dan Stevens. While talking to Collider, Stevens randomly namedropped the character and since only 0.05% of the population knows who it is, it might just be because he’s voicing him.

Hit Monkey Trailer Indicates He’s Set to Square Off Against Some Killer Foes

    marvel hit monkey

Marvel’s animated series Hit Monkey is set to debut on Hulu on November 17th and the first trailer for the series gave brief glimpses of a couple of characters that the merc turned macaque might find himself up against: Daredevil baddie Lady Bullseye and Immortal Weapon Fat Cobra! The trailer didn’t really give any context for their roles in the series, so they might be brief cameos for all we know, but they were certainly cool surprises in what was a fairly intriguing trailer.

Marvel Studios Victoria Alonso Gets Promoted

Marvel's Voices: Victoria Alonso on Marvel Studios' Approach to Filmmaking, Stan Lee's Enduring Legacy, and Finding Your Inner Super Hero | Marvel

One of the keys to Marvel Studios continued success is that the people who built it beginning with 2008’s Iron Man have stayed the course and followed their vision. One of those key visionaries, Victoria Alonso, who Kevin Feige called “one of the most dynamic, candid and accessible executives in the industry”, just got herself a new job within the Studio. Alonso is now President of Physical and Post Production, Visual Effects, and Animation Production and we have no idea what that means but it’s great to see Alonso continue to climb the ladder of the company she helped shape.

Disney Plus Day Should Be Pretty Sick, Bro

We also learned that Lucasfilm has a Boba Fett special on the agenda. We’ll keep you updated on any further changes to the schedule, but as of now it sounds like we’re going to be buzzing on November 12th!

Netflix Bringing Back the Mythical Character from Bumf@uck Oklahoma in ‘Tiger King 2’

    tiger king 2

Netflix has rung the bell and awakened the Tiger King. The studio has announced a second season of the absolutely insane documentary that first captured everyone’s attention right at the beginning of the COVID pandemic in 2020. Trapped in their homes with nothing else to watch, humans were exposed to the stories of Joe Exotic and Carol Baskin and nobody as been the same since. Hoping to kickstart the Apocalypse, Netflix is going to stream the follow up, presumably in 2022. I’m never going to mentally recover from this.

MS. MARVEL Star Iman Vellani Opens Up About What It Means to Her to Be Joining the MCU — GeekTyrant

Once upon a time, Kamala Khan was set to make a cameo in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Then COVID screwed that up. Then her solo series was set to stream on Disney Plus late this year. Then COVID screwed that up (maybe?). Now we’ll have to wait until 2022 to see Kamala embiggen on our TVs. According to Variety, the rumored delay has been confirmed though no official date has been given. Maybe we’ll get one during November’s Disney Plus Day.

Olivia Colman’s Spy Character is Here to Stay

Olivia Colman: Latest News, Pictures & Videos - HELLO!

In a Murphy’s Multiverse exclusive, we reported that Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman’s unknown spy character will be sticking around the MCU in future projects. Seems like things are going to get real interesting in the MCU. Who do you trust?

‘Aquaman 2’ Will Have a Shark, But Not King Shark

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is rounding out its cast and it looks like they figured that since everyone liked King Shark so much in The Suicide Squad, that they should have a shark too. And since they aren’t using King Shark, they decided to have a telepathic shark! Sounds like this one is going to get pretty wild.

    ‘Secret Invasion’ Will Be Quake-free

Marvel's Secret Invasion: 10 Best Moments From The Comics The MCU Can Adapt

Chloe Bennet will not be reprising her role as Daisy Johnson/Quake in the MCU…at least not yet…and probably not ever. The star of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. took time out of her day to break the news to her fans via Twitter. Nobody is exactly sure why she did it nor why anyone thought she was in Secret Invasion in the first place, but let’s not facts get in the way of fan theories. On a positive note, she has yet to deny that she will be joining the MCU as Mephisto, so keep your fingers crossed.

  • James Gunn Teases Secrets in ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’

James Gunn Teases Secrets in ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’

After a long wait, we’re finally getting the third and final entry of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. James Gunn will return to the director’s chair after his time with DC’s The Suicide Squad. The best part, we’re also getting a Disney+ Christmas Special ahead of the third film’s release. Gunn did confirm in July that it’s going to connect with Vol. 3, but it seems some curious secrets will be revealed in the upcoming special.

    https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1441421919199264770?s=19

Of course, he doesn’t reveal what exactly that means, but the special will likely connect Thor: Love and Thunder with the third film. So, we’ll get our first hint a the main plotline that will drive the Guardians on their final journey. The secrets in question might also reference some curious revelations between the team, such as the origin of Rocket. There were some hints that the upcoming threequel will focus on Gamora and Nebula, which could come into play as well.

  • Theory Thursday: Ultron Wants to Replace the Watcher in ‘What If…?’

Theory Thursday: Ultron Wants to Replace the Watcher in ‘What If…?’

The latest episode of What If…? finally unveiled the overarching plot that the series is building towards. After Thor made plans for a date, he and the Watcher were surprised by the welcoming of Ultron bots. From a mysterious portal, Ultron appeared in the body of Vision clad in the armor of his former shell. At that moment, the episode ends as even the all-knowing Watcher is confused that a once happy ending would get abrupted by tragedy once again. We, as viewers, are left wondering what his arrival means for the multiverse.

There are a few things we can take away from his sudden introduction. Ultron managed to achieve his goal from Avengers: Age of Ultron by adding his consciousness into the new body. We still have no confirmation if James Spader is returning to voice the character, but he didn’t return to voice the character in Avengers: Damage Control VR and might have moved on from the franchise. Still, there’s some hope they convinced him to return while he is busy filming The Blacklist.

He also is wielding all six Infinity Stones on his body, which he shouldn’t feel any side effects from due to his body not being organic. It also implies that this version of the character most likely succeeded in dropping Sokovia and wiping out Earth. We learn in the Age of Ultron that his primary goal is to create an empire of dust where only metal survives. If he achieved his goal on Earth, there’s the chance Thanos came after him due to possessing the Mind Stone. Once he fuses with the stone, he’ll felt the others and reunite them. It makes him one of the most formidable enemies within the multiverse.

Marvel's WHAT IF...? Assembles the Guardians of the Multiverse for New Hyundai Ad — GeekTyrant

They might be taking inspiration from the time when Ultron became the leader of the Phalanx during Annihilation: Conquest and with the complete domination of the galaxy, he sets his eyes on the multiverse. Yet, not to annihilate organic life but to rule over them in the mightiest position there is. He’s the worst aspect of Tony Stark and believes he can control the future. The best way to do so would be to replace the Watcher.

The reason for this theory is due to one single image potentially teasing his end goal. We see Vision in his Ultron armor floating above a scene. There’s a chance that the next episode ends with Ultron taking the Watcher’s position and narrating the final episode as the now fallen god-like entity summons together with the strongest warriors from across the multiverse. The consequences of him gaining the watchful eye of the entire multiverse but with the desire of intervention. Who knows what he would unleash if he obtained that power. If he wins, no place in the vast multiverse would be safe.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ 2022 Delay Confirmed

    ‘Ms. Marvel’ 2022 Delay Confirmed

When Marvel Studios announced all the Disney+ series airing in 2021, it seemed like quite the line-up, as we got trailers for WandaVision, Loki, and even a Ms. Marvel sizzle reel. As a result of delays, we had four films and six entire Disney+ series heading our way throughout the year. That doesn’t include the recently announced Hit-Monkey series and MODOK on Hulu. It’s been a busy year and with the lack of announcements surrounding Ms. Marvel, it hinted that she may get a later release. After a long wait, we finally got a confirmation that it’s indeed delayed until 2022.

Variety’s Adam B. Vary confirmed in a recent showcase of Marvel Studios’ upcoming releases that the series indeed got delayed. While no official release date got included, there have been rumors hinting at a potential February release. The timing would give the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett time to release its episodes and get the focus into the new year.

    https://twitter.com/adambvary/status/1440844586016927744

We know that her character will make her return in The Marvels, which will premiere in November. So, they might’ve decided to postpone its release to consider her return in the same year and continue work on the effects-heavy show. Hawkeye seems to rely on more practical effects, and they’ll require some work to get Ms. Marvel’s embiggening powers right. We only know she’ll gain additional abilities, which have yet to get confirmed outside of merchandise. Here’s hoping that Disney+ Day offers a look and timing for her debut.

  • Chloe Bennet Denies Involvement in ‘Secret Invasion’

Chloe Bennet Denies Involvement in ‘Secret Invasion’

Add Chloe Bennet to the long list of actors and actresses who have denied their rumored involvement in Marvel Studios’ projects over the years. Bennett took to social media, seemingly unprompted, to let her fans know that despite their deepest desires, she would not be returning to the role of Daisy Johnson, aka, Quake, in the Disney Plus streaming series Secret Invasion.

    https://twitter.com/dailybennet/status/1440862840814858243?s=19

Bennet rose to fame in the role over seven seasons of ABC’s non-canonical series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and fans have been pining to see her character cross over into the MCU. Bennet joins the ranks of actors and actresses such as Tatiana Maslany, Paul Rudd, Andrew Garfield, Charlie Cox and Allison Brie in denying their involvement in MCU projects; ironically, while fans are often willing to take most of these actors at their word despite evidence to the contrary, it seems that, in this case, fans are going to Fox Mulder route and choosing to want to believe rather than take Bennet’s word for it.

While Secret Invasion is going to go heavy on the espionage-both Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke are playing spies and there are at least 3 other big spy roles in the series-at this point it looks Quake won’t be joining the party. Fortunately fans who want to see more of Bennet in the role can always head to Netflix to rewatch the series.

Marvel Studios Secret Invasion will start production soon and is expected to stream on Disney Plus in the Fall of 2022.

  • REPORT: ‘Assembled’ Episode of ‘Black Widow’ Eyeing an October Release

REPORT: ‘Assembled’ Episode of ‘Black Widow’ Eyeing an October Release

Marvel Studios Assemble has become a new format for the company to showcase behind the scenes of their new Disney+ series. Yet, it seemed like they might avoid releasing episodes focused on their various film releases, as they are normally included with the physical release. Yet, it seems that they might get a focus after all, as a special look behind-the-scenes episode might release on October 20th for Black Widow.

The release makes sense if you consider that Black Widow will be available to all subscribers as of October 6th. So, they’ll take a similar approach with their shows releasing the Assembled episode sometime after its Disney+ release. We just got the announcement that Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings will release on Disney+ as of November 12th. So, we could expect an episode on it around two weeks later as well. Unlike the series, they are a one-time release and there’s no real build-up from one episode to the next, which might be the reason there’s a long wait between releases. It gives the film some additional life as people might want to check it out alongside the Assembled episode.

It’ll be interesting if the Disney+ episodes offer some additional footage that isn’t available on the physical releases to make it stand out. Disney’s main goal is always to draw in new subscribers. As such, it might be an initiative to get some eyes to check out footage that is only available on the streaming service. We don’t have an official announcement on the release, but we’ll likely get a poster in the coming weeks to confirm this release.

  • Disney+’s MCU Library Deserves a Commentary Track by ‘What If…?’s Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher

Disney+’s MCU Library Deserves a Commentary Track by ‘What If…?’s Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher

What If..? is a curious experiment into the multiverse. We get brief narrations by Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher throughout each episode. He never truly takes centerstage but rather is just a guiding voice. The first breaking of that rule is his brief interaction with Doctor Strange. Plus, he’ll likely return for future seasons, especially as a second one is already in development for next year. Still, he never takes away from the episode is only in the background, especially visually. Yet, Wright‘s narration is a highlight of the series and there sometimes’s a lack of it. There’s a way Disney+ and Marvel could offer more of his narration to promote the rewatch value of older MCU entries, such as adding a special commentary.

Marvel Studios' 'What If…?': Jeffrey Wright Talks Voicing Marvel's Most 'Passionate Fan' with The Watcher | Marvel

Considering he watches every part of the multiverse, he must’ve witnessed the Sacred Timeline at some point. In a way, Marvel Studios and Disney+ could bank on the Watcher’s role to offer some very creative new bonus material. Just imagine having a new Watcher narration added to each of the previously released Marvel Studios films. Not only do we get more of Jeffrey Wright, but also some fun jabs at past franchise changes. Why not have him mention that it’s odd that Don Cheadle‘s Rhodey looks different than before or reference that he preferred his multiversal counterpart.

There’s a lot of potential just to have fun with it. Why not have him joined by another Watcher played by Kevin Feige? They may have discussions over story elements and how they connected back in later entries of the franchise. Offer some meta-commentary that plays with the conventions within the MCU. He’s seen the multiverse. So, why not let the narrator comment on how scenarios would’ve been different if this was in another universe. Teasing the endless possibilities of an ever-expanding franchise. Marvel Studios can have fun with it and it would be an amazing way to add something special to Disney+.

  • REVIEW: ‘What If… Thor Were an Only Child?’ – Episode 7

REVIEW: ‘What If… Thor Were an Only Child?’ – Episode 7

The most recent episode of What If… ? is certainly the most casual and light episode to date which is sure to please the select group of fans who have been complaining that the episodes have consistently been overly tragic. Exploring Thor and Midgard’s fate had he not grown up with Loki as a brother ends up as a fun romp with little more to offer outside of its own bubble…until that phenomenal ending.

Turns out, having Loki as his adopted brother was the element that prevents Thor from becoming the aptly nicknamed “Party Thor”, or a full-on raging frat bro throwing wild and destructive parties across the cosmos. Not only has Thor himself been remixed, but his influence seems to have spread across the Nine Realms and beyond, as countless other major and minor characters make appearances at these legendary parties as party animals in their own right.

This episode is notable for having virtually all of its characters voiced by the original actors, though there are too many to specifically mention. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor feels like the Thor: Ragnarok version of the character, but with some added frat boy persona and devoid of any semblance of seriousness or responsibility. Ironically, Loki taking the Jotunheim throne still has the two ending up as “brothers from another mother.” He becomes the most laidback and seemingly least motivated with glorious purpose iteration of the character the MCU has given us. Tom Hiddleston’s performance is integral to pulling it off.

Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster is arguably the main character of the episode as her actions drive the plot. Thor and Jane Foster’s kindling romance is highlighted throughout the episode, but it’s her ultimate resolve to stop the alien invasion from destroying the planet that truly pulls the strings with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s involvement. Kat Dennings’ Darcy is true to character and the voice work is perfectly corny to match her. Seth Green’s Howard the Duck’s three-ish lines landed so well that they are some of the most memorable lines of the entire episode.

The result is a quirky alien invasion story that sees S.H.I.E.L.D. under the acting leadership of Maria Hill – due to Fury being incapacitated from a Korg party foul – responding to the very real threat of Thor’s planetary party destroying many parts of Earth, if not the entire planet. This is the vessel through which Alexandra Daniels’ Captain Marvel makes her true debut in What If… ? (apart from her very brief cameo in Episode 3). From this, we get epic showdowns between powerhouse Carol Danvers and the God of Thunder. The two are a solid duo and the matchup is no doubt another example of the series having fun with which characters they would want to see go up against one another.

Still, the plot is ultimately a classic teenager throws a party while parents are out of town, then finds out mom is coming home, and frantically tries to clean up the mess. Of course, said teenager somehow succeeds at the very last minute. Frigga still figures out that Thor was not studying as part of cultural exchange, but nevertheless, the classic comedy trope is all over this episode.

At the end of the day, Episode 7 is arguably a throwaway episode but not necessarily in a bad way. The writers and actors clearly had fun with it, and it was a lighthearted as well as a rose-colored view of what alternate timelines can provide. It also took incredible advantage of the talent available to create a melting pot of MCU characters in the form of a big party. Even Nebula needs a night to drink her family issues away.

The Watcher goes out of his way to acknowledge that this timeline’s story is an example of a simple happy ending. That is, until, the exciting final few seconds that feel like a classic post-credits scene setting up the “big bad” for an eventual crossover showdown. Here, we see what appears to be Vision as Ultron with a sentry army coming through some type of portal. Not just that, he also seems to possess all six Infinity Stones.

Almost certainly, this is something the Watcher might feel the need to address sooner rather than later considering that he seems to be completely caught off guard at Vision-Ultron’s arrival. Also, there are only two episodes left in this season. Given what What If… ? has either already provided or teased it can provide, a culmination of the entire season into an overarching crux will surely, and hopefully, be something worth waiting for.
